  1. I am a new user of TNG, coming from MyHeritage. I have imported the gedcom file which contained 1866 persons and 700+ links to mediafiles. Everything went well with no errors, which is great. I've noticed when I open any persons information, LDS fields are always shown. I googled LDS and I do now understand the purpose of these fields. However, none of my ancestors or nearest family are members of LDS. it would therefore be very nice if these LDS related field could be optionally enabled/disabled. Best regards poulanker
  2. Dear everyone, I already had a topic with this idea, but after deeper examination it went to "difficult to generate" state. Therefore I made an other Attribute Type and gave every persons an exact "level (L-06,L-07,...)" so I could make a report with. I need help how it is possible to make a page type like "First Name List", but with the selected leveled persons, separated with levels? Or any other nicer way than report... or last in a "Report" with also persons pictures in it. Thanks for any help, regards, Balazs
  3. I use the MOD "Display Jobs Facts" Now I noticed that the job is displayed (for living people) even if you are not logged in. I created the settings so that you have to log in to see all information about living people. How can I prevent the job from being displayed at the top for living people???
  4. Hello fellow genealogists... and coders. Is it a big task to alphabetize the media files, has anyone accomplished it? kwbush
  5. Dear everyone, I use the TNG-14 for my tree and I really proud to show my/our extended family (with so far 230 person) with it. I always wanted to show all member together somehow as well, but unfortunately it cannot possible in this moment with "tree view". I just think it may be possible with a kind of query (I already try with built in report maker), but I think it is not possible to manage these data vertically in leveled 2 or more lines. After I came up an idea, should make list all member horizontal (with picture and data) selected by their "level". That can help me to show every person who included in my tree and even more importantly show the cousins to each other. I would like to ask help if somebody have an idea how to make a kind of "level full view of cousins" or query.
  6. Hello friends, Since this is such a wonderful international group, I was wondering if you are acquainted with this site https://maps.arcanum.com/en/ which is used by Matricula also https://data.matricula-online.eu/de/ They have the most wonderful old maps and their interface allows you to see the old and new look of the place map. It would be wonderful if this kind of map could be integrated in TNG. Now, I have to tell you I know nothing about programming and also my main language is Spanish so many things are hard to understand by me. (I know I have good English but only in everyday English). Maybe someone would be interested and help investigating if it can be done, costs, permits, etc. All suggestions are welcome... Darrin would something like this would interest you? Best regards, Maria Rosa Schroeder

    Research log

Hi Fellow TNG members, There is a research link mod and a research tools mod available for TNG users. We all do our research and somehow document what we researched when and where (or maybe some do not) TNG has the possibility to add these research notes to the different notes fields and hide them if needed. What I'm looking for is a something different. I'm looking for a research log mod. The intention is that on the persons page an extra tab is made available (just before the edit tab) with the name Research Log The content can be a simple text field that allows us to enter research done and research to do items but it could also be a table. It should be able to handle dates, hyperlinks and text formatting. That way like we have an overview of all research done & to do related to that specific person. The new Research tab should only be available to Admin accounts. Hope someone can find the time to create something like this if there is enough "need" for this in the community.
  8. Could it be possible to generate a report containing latitude/longitude positions in addition to todays available queries? i.e: personID fullname birthdate birthplace latitudepos longitudepos................ and if possible adding rows (in addition to places allready given in gedcom file)? I have not found any such possibility (linking personID key with places), except for showing users, in portions of 50, clicking on links from Places. Think the idea would make a better overview of geo positions, both on tng-site and use of external mapping sites.(making maps with animations, measurements and others)

    Forum post assistant

Hi all, sometimes when I read posts here in this forum, I often think about the Forum Post Assistant that is recommended when posting in the Joomla forums… https://forumpostassistant.github.io/docs/ I wondered if there were some clever people here that could build something similar, but maybe just one file…that we ask people to momentarily upload to their site, load the file in their browser and then cut and paste the output into here when they post? Off the top of my head, it could check php version, TNG version, database version, connectivity to the database, installed mods etc etc…nothing that we wouldn’t ask anyway (we wouldn’t check things we shouldn’t ask for)…so instead of playing 20 questions sometimes, people would be able to see a lot of the needed information in the first couple of posts? Just an idea. Happy to be involved in testing and writing up a how to wiki page, but the actual coding is beyond me. Might flick this to Darrin also, as I would think it’s a time saver when trying to provide support in the end. Phil
  10. Hello, folks, I am checking to see if anyone has possibly modified their main (public) DNA page (browse_dna_tests.php) in any way, and if they have, if they are perhaps good at coding . I find that the default TNG (at least up to 14.0.2) is lacking information that is important to me, and although I am in no way a coder, I have stumbled through that file & managed to rearrange some of the columns, and also to add a couple of columns: Vendor (as in the testing company), and Test Date (when the test was taken). The attached image shows the screenshot from the stock TNG (14.0.2) browse_dna_tests.php at the top of the image, and my modified TNG (14.0.2) browse_dna_tests.php at the bottom of the image showing the 2 additional columns, and my rearrangements of some of the columns. For someone who has many DNA tests listed on their TNG site (as in hundreds, if not thousands of DNA tests), possibly the additional columns that I've added would not be beneficial to them. And for someone who has no interest in modifying their browse_dna_tests.php file, the below problems of mine would be too involved for them to waste their time assisting. But if there are any coders out there who think that the modifications would be usable for them too... The Test Type column has the tests sorted alphabetically (which is perfect), but they're sorted alphabetically because that is how Darrin coded it... that column is in its original location. My problem that I'm having is: For each Test Type (i.e. atDNA, mtDNA, Y-DNA), I would like the next column, Taken By, to be sorted alphabetically, so everyone who took the atDNA test sorted alphabetically, followed by everyone who took the mtDNA test sorted alphabetically, then everyone who took a Y-DNA) test sorted alphabetically; Then for the Vendors in the next column to be sorted alphabetically (example: if a user took an mtDNA test from several vendors (companies), those vendors would be listed alphabetically after that person's name in the mtDNA section. Although the companies listed in the Vendor column I got from ($dnarow['vendor']) in the show_dna_test.php file, and that info is being displayed correctly, I am unable to get the 'test_date' to display at all, most likely because there is extra code involved in the show_dna_test.php file for the date. There are numbers listed in browse_dna_tests.php that I have no idea what they mean (and which might have something to do with the sorting?), such as: data-tablesaw-priority="1" data-tablesaw-priority="2" data-tablesaw-priority="3" data-tablesaw-priority="4" data-tablesaw-priority="5" If/when I get my modified browse_dna_tests.php working correctly, I would like to modify admin_dna_tests.php too, as I find the omission of a column for Vendor to be a big hindrance to me in locating the correct test to modify. I can NOT go to Darrin to possibly implement the above additional/rearranged columns in a future TNG release, as quite likely I am the only person who wishes them . Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this post. Regards, John
  11. hello forum, In order to be able to carry out a controllable and as complete as possible GEDCOM import, a log file of the rejected tags would be useful. Many other programs output messages with the following content after the import process is complete: Import from My_gedcom_file.ged from 11/11/2023 Read #99999 rows 8888 lines accepted 9999 rows rejected 99 people 99 families 99 sources 99 notes 99 media 99 places successfully imported. Details can be found in the log file "Import.log" The log file could be stored in TNG's GEDCOM directory. and have the following structure, for example: Log file for importing My_gedcom_file.ged from 11/11/2023 99999 rows read 8888 lines accepted 9999 rows rejected ================================================== ========= Line 345 reject "Line Text" Line 541 reject "Line Text" Line 712 reject "Line Text" End of log file Please check whether this idea can be implemented. Thank you very much Johannes
  12. In order to be able to check or improve the import process, it would be helpful to receive a log file about the import process. Unfortunately I can't find any. Where is such a file, where can I find it? Thank you Johannes Addition on 14.8.2023 Interesting: no reaction so far..... Does anyone have trouble importing a GEDCOM file (I can't believe this!)? I miss hints which GEDCOM tags and their combinations are rejected by the omput routine. In the case of address data (line1 and line2), I was lucky enough to find out that the pairing ADDR in connection with CONT is not accepted by the routine, but that the tags ADR1 and ADR2 must be used. Unfortunately, there seem to be several TAGS and their combinations that the import routine does not accept. A reference to this in a log file or something similar would be very helpful. I would be grateful for an answer/opinion from the forum users. <g> John

    Why Wordpress?

I am in the process of developing my core software that will run my site. This may be something I share with the broader community at some point in time. I would like to understand what the core drive is to a TNG/Wordpress integration? Is it the blogging aspect of Wordpress? Modern Templates? Ease of Use? If you are not comfortable posting in the forums, please send me a personal message.

    What's new and Most wanted

Hello everyone, I have two suggestions/requests regarding the What's new and Most Wanted information. What's new: (Solved: see further down the thread)) Adding a dropdown menu offering the user the choice to see the newly/changed informattion over the last 30, 60 or 90 days. Most wanted: On the person page add a new tab with the name Most wanted. The tab contains all the information regarding that person that is still missing and/or needs further research or investigation. The text should be entered as free text with the possibblity to format the entered text in font, color, style etc. just as in @Michel KIRSCH his Nicedit_media_description. The information on the Most wanted tab should be incorporated in the GEDCOM export and import. Last but not least the text should be printable as pdf or plain text. Printing and editing of the Most wanted information should be in accordance with the user rights policy's for each user. In essence this would likely result in two separate mods. Any further questions, advise or ideas are of course welcome.
  15. Unfortunately, the Kloosterman method doesn't work for me anymore since I have a full site editing theme. Do I need to enter something else for the topmenu.php than <?php require ("../wp-blog-header.php"); get_header(); ?>

    Standardisation of placenames

I have been collectiong genealogical information since 1995, starting with a dos programm called fhs Abt 1999 I shifted to Legacy and since abt 2009 I use tng For several reasons my collection of placenames is a mess, see https://geneagraphie.com/places.php that should only show countrienames I would love to make use of all tools tng offers like geocode and maps but there are too much duplicates in my database. I have abt 90.000 placenames and at least 50% should be merged I think For a proper merge action the placenames should be standardized Example, placenames ending with Spain, Esp, Spanje (dutch), Espagne should all be changed to placenames ending with España An easy sql queriy to change Spain to España is UPDATE tng_places SET place=REPLACE (place, "Spain", "España") WHERE gedcom="xx"; It's more complicated to change esp to España. This query would change the dutch place Weesp to WeEspaña. Only ", esp" at the end of the placename should be replaced. Michel Kirsch produced following query for me UPDATE tng_places SET place = CONCAT(SUBSTR(place, 1, LENGTH(place)-5) , ", España") WHERE SUBSTR(place,-5, 5) = ", esp" AND gedcom="xx"; 5 is for ", esp". The last 5 characters of place(names) are removed from the string when equal to ", esp" and ", España" is added to the mutilated string However, when the table tng_places already has an entrance ending with ", Madrid, España" the sql machine produces an error message because tng_places doesn't accept duplicates. Thus, either "xxx, Madrid, España" or "xxx, Madrid, Esp" should be deleted before the script can be run could following script do the job? DELETE from tng_places WHERE places(SUBSTR(place, 1, LENGTH8(place)-5, 5)=", esp")=places(SUBSTR(place, 1, LENGTH8(place)-8, 8)=", España") Please advise Many thanks and regards Hans Weebers
  17. Simple SEO has been around for over 7 years now, and in that time a lot has changed in TNG, the Mod Manager, and PHP. The experience of moving from TNG 13 to TNG 14 has demonstrated that some of the Mod coding approaches I used when Simple SEO was introduced are no longer sustainable. Furthermore, mod conflicts are getting more and more difficult to solve or work around. Accordingly, I've decided that Simple SEO needs a 'clean' re-implementation, and I'm going to start that sooner rather than later to try and get a sustainable package prepared before the next TNG update. With that in mind, I'd like to solicit feature and language suggestions for V8, the next release. If you're not yet using TNG 14...don't worry. I will back-port V8 to TNG 13 and perhaps to TNG 12. Keep in mind, though, that the original purpose of Simple SEO was to make HTML header changes and page simplifications (titles, sub-headers, ...) that improve search-engine optimization. So I'll be looking at suggestions with that in mind. Suggestions for additional language localization can be anything you like. (Oh...and...I don't have any ideas regarding how to improve SEO for newly "AI enabled" engines like Bing, so don't ask. :- ) I was a cybersecurity guy in my career not a artificial intelligence guy.) All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks, Bill Herndon Lindell-Herndon Genealogy
  18. When a user enters the site for the first time, I want to have a popup notice, similar to the GDPR that would be viewed and clicked to close. It would need to be one that may be changed according to circumstances. For instance, maybe for the month of January, I have a Happy New Year popup and then in February I have a popup making a plea for users to add their family information, or even a popup to fundraise. Preferably it would only pop up once each time the site is entered, be centered at the top of the screen and be small enough (max 375px wide) to fit mobile device screens. The container would need to hold text and an image. Has this been discussed before? I have not seen it and apologize if it has. Short of a popup box, I'd be happy to with adding a custom button to link to an outside page at the bottom of the home page above the footer. I'll take the easy way out, probably a button, but a pop up, as aggravating as they are, would be most desired. If anybody has suggestions OR if there's a mod to do this please help. Thanks
  19. Feature update/request Import Settings / If no Birth Date -- assume Person is Living Person is Dead I would like a 3rd option "Leave as is" (do nothing) I have these set correctly within my software do NO want TNG to change Kevin

    Data Protection Policy in Danish

I'm educated lawyer, so I also have focus on GDPR, rules and regulations. Therefore I've translated Data Protection Policy file into Danish, so that it is almost according to Danish (means European) rules. On my own I have on added this - so this is not part of the standard file (it is my own "invention"): Almost because: According to the Danish/European rules it should to be possible to accept some cookies and reject others before entering the site. TNG does not offer this possibility. You can only accept, because the button says "OK" and nothing else. Conclusion: You can download and use my file if you like. It is so precise as possible according to the rules. But it is not 100 percent legally. But you will show your customers that you have done so much as possible. data_protection_policy.php

    Help function in TNG

Hi everyone, Not everyone visiting my TNG familytree is very skilled in navigating the familytree and there are older familymembers who aren't skilled in browsing the web either. This leads me to believe that for those who visit a TNG website for the first time or not frequently can easily get lost in the tree. Not exectly knowing what they are looking at and/or where to find certain information can be a major reason for people not to return to the website. With that in mind I have started to create some instructions on what can be found where in the familytreee and how navigation works in the familytree. Basicly I made a Help function that works from within TNG itself. Remeber though that this doesn't replace the TNG WIKI For the Help to work I took the following steps. I downlouded the free History template form GWT - History template which is available for free and will fully intergrate with your own TNG installation. I created a Help directory in the TNG directory (FTP) I used Notepad++ to create the help content. Made several PHP files that reflect the help topics so each helptopic has it's own php file. Created a Help link on my familytree homepage. Clicking the Help link will open a new tab in the browser which shows the help template in a two collumn format. (See screenshots) The left collumn is a menu with hyperinks to the different Help topics. The right collumn contains the explanation of the specific Help topic. Since I'm still working on it, the translation is Dutch only at the moment but as soon as all is ready I will start working on an English translation. Bare in mind that the Help topics are based on my personal TNG installation including some installed Mods. So for you to make it work in your own TNG installation you need to tweak the PHP files to your own needs. This also means you will need some basic knowledge of writing PHP files. It's not to difficult for I did it too. Trial and error combined with Notepad++ and worked perfectly for me. If anyone else is interested in this Help functionality please whisper (PM) me. If you can't wait just let me know and I will gladly send you the current PHP files for you to work on. Hope this is useful to others too and if you have any comments or question don't hasitate to share them. Added are a few screenshots.
  22. I'm using template 17, I have the extra links up top - Third and Fourth Link - I could, obviously delete them, or add another tree. I don't want to add additional trees or branches. So I was thinking maybe a blog? Or article format maybe? Is there a blog mod? What have you all seen or done with the extra link?
  23. I have very large PDFs that I have on my TNG website. Issue is the load times are ridiculously long, Has anyone used Adobe or a competitor's product to speed load times by only displaying the pages that display, or not having to download entire file. I do not want to use the folio idea because I want them to still be able to search the PDF files Thanks
  24. Hello! TNG functionality has a limited number of localized languages for the site. There is Russian, but no Ukrainian. Who would you turn to to do Ukrainian localization? I can translate the text from Russian and check it with English, but it needs to be implemented in the system. Thank you
  25. Is it possible that the DNA section be changed so that the test information is just the bits relevant to the person who took the test name, date (if known), where taken, gedmatch, haplogroups (if known) etc. Then link that person in the database and add the other info like MRCA, largest segment etc. This would mean then that a single Test could be added once and link to multiple people with all the relevant information. The current system just doesn't work, in order to add the data for the match you would need to add the test multiple times. Just looking now at one match on MyHeritage this person matches me, my dad, my daughter and more. In order to add this I would have to either add it at least 3 times to add the segment data (which is all different which is to be expected) etc or add it once and skip the segment data etc. Currently it is totally impractical to add test data with detail, I manage DNA kits for at least 7 family members at present across all the DNA testing sites and I really need to be able to add each test (1 per person per site) to the database and then link them to who they match with known details. Having tested at 2 sites and uploaded my atDNA to many others for myself I am looking at matches across 7 sites for me alone plus I have done mtDNA. Then theres the family ones on top.
