    Sources and their significance

I've been doing genealogy research for approximatly 15 years now, which is compared to others, not very long and I've seen a lot of websites that present genealogical data. Sites like MyHeritage, FamilySearch and many of the websites created by the TNG users to name a few. Question is "How reliable is the data they provide?" I would start by saying "Unreliable" and I will explain why this is my opinion and why it should probably be yours too to start with. As an example: Person A: Builds his family tree on the correct facts, but does not mention any of it in his software (he keeps everything in binders or as screenshots on his computer). Person B: Builds his family tree by making up all kinds of things, mentions some sources, but are neither correct nor complete. Person C: Builds his family tree based on facts from the right sources, and mentions them in the right way in his software program. It will be clear that Person C is doing it the correct way and Person B makes a mess of it. But Person A, on the other hand, may well have set up a credible family tree, but did not (correctly) mention the sources in the software. Conclusion: The value of citing sources, what is right and what is wrong, can only be determined if you learn which source you can and cannot trust. And even then, situations can be debatable. This means that whatever data we retrieve from whatever source should be qualified as unreliable unless proven otherwise. Therefore we should examine every piece of data for its quality and whether it is consistent with validated sources. This is something we need to do for ourselves and we cannot just rely on the work others did. All 'n all, to me data quality is more important than data quantity. In my opinion data can be qualified as: Primary source: Original materials created at the time of an event or study, such as diaries, photographs, or official documents, that provide direct evidence or firsthand accounts Secondary source: Any document that draws on one or more primary sources and interprets or analyses them; Also sources such as newspapers whose accuracy is open to question Unreliable source: any source that, at the moment, is not verifiable in any way shape or form Needs review: Any source that hasn't been reviewed yet and therefore doesn't fit in any of the three catogories mentioned above. TNG has an option to qualify the reliability of sources in the "Edit Existing Citation" popup window. You can qualify them with a number (0-3) where the higher number means higher reliability. This reliability score is shown in the sources block on the person page and familygroup page. To me the way TNG presents the reliability is insufficient. How many visitors of my website actualy know what "reliability: 2" means? My quess is none unless they're a TNG user themselves and even then... Just to be clear, the above is my personal opinion and doesn't have to be anyone elses. Taking the above into account, I have started developing a mod that indicates more clearly what the value of the source is to me. The name of the mod will be "Source Reliability" and I hope to publish it before the end of next week. See the screenshots to get a glimpse of what it will change. Any comments regarding the above are welcome and I hope this helps others

    Genealogy and AI

Together with ChatGPT I’ve been brainstorming about the possible role of AI in Genealogy software. The report is on my website Genealogy and AI - Francis The intro is quite general. I would recommend experts to concentrate on the paragraphs on AI.
  3. Wondering how TNG users are solving the problem of unknown or incomplete names. Do you enter only the known first or last name or enter a substitute such as "unknown" or "NN"? Is there a settled wisdom on the topic?
  4. I did not work with aldfaer my self, but my companions did before they made the step forwards to TNG. Does anyone know where the 'facts' from aldfaer are stored in TNG on importing the gedcom from aldfaer?
  5. Hello Everyone. I've read most of the threads here about exporting a gedcom file from Ancestry and trying to import into the desktop software then export from that and import into TNG. But as a lot of you know, something in the ancestry.com gedcom and some of the other desktop apps changes your people and family IDs which is very annoying to say the least. I have a couple more thousand people and families in my Ancestry.com tree that I have in my TNG database and have tried several ways mentioned in the forums here without any luck. The IDs would always change. So, I put a support ticket into RootsMagic about this and with their permission here is the email comversation I had with Jackson at RootsMagic Support: Well that worked for me and I posted this to hopefully help others here on the form with the same issues. Like I said, this worked for me using RM8. I know alot of you guys and gals use different apps if you use one at all, so I can't say this will work for you. "Your mileage may vary" FYI, on my genealogy computer, I use RM8 running on a Dell Optiplex 790, and Windows 10 pro. I tested the gedcom created from RM8 on my local wampserver running PHP v7.4.33, which is what my sites at Simply Hosting is running

    Mod builder?

Hello All, in the next month or so, I hope to have fully debugged my first (and likely, last) Python script. It is meant to be a purpose-built utility to prepare DNA matched cousin’s ancestral lines for analysis. In short, records in the GEDCOM of the DNA cousin are tagged and the utility extracts those records and processes them. The output of CSV or Excel is either a stand alone study or added to a larger group. I’m not sure how such efforts get started but I would be pleased to connect with anyone who has a subject matter interest or interest in applying their skills towards a small project. I thought I would start by asking here in this space. kind regards, Ron Yates

    What is purpose of Families?

I've searched the wiki and the forum and saw a few references to "families" but I don't understand its purpose. I know this is sorta a dumb question but to be the third thing listed on the Admin nav I figure it has to have some importance. And right now I don't see it. Thanks in advance ...
  10. My TNG site will always be a working site. I really liked when Ancestry added TAGs. I immediately started using the Verified tag for individuals in the tree that were correct. I started doing the same thing in my TNG site by adding a ✓ [CODE: & check; ... concatenated]. It works well except the code shows up on just a few of the displays within Admin. Example showing the checkmark: https://www.idogenealogy.info/tng/search.php?mylastname=COFFMAN&lnqualify=equals&mybool=AND BUT is there a better way to do this? Thanks ~ Lynda

    Pedigree Layout

Hey Yall. On my live site and bothe my test sites, I have an issue with the pedigree layout, The first 2 or 3 generations have no lines connecting the boxes. Does someone have a fix for this?
  12. I have collected numerous GEDCOM files (50-60) from various family members and others. I'm now retired and now want to merge/extract these files into one entity. There are obviously duplicates, some with more information than others. I am trying to decide what methods to use. I've thought of trying a GEDCOM to SQL parser but defining the schema and all of the tables and dependencies seems overwhelming. I've also tried using manual duplicate/view/edit functions in some of the available genealogy apps, but that seems tedious and non-productive. Has anyone faced this same situation? Can TNG do this somehow? If I import all 50-60 files into TNG will I end up with a mess? And how did you go about solving it?
  13. Hello everyone, hope this finds you all doing well. I've been going through my people and families, getting rid of duplicates, etc. Now in my pedigree chart (screenshot attached) some cells want me to add a new family when one already exists. What am I doing wrong here? If a family already exists, why do i need to add a new one in the pedigree chart? is there something i'm missing to fix in the family that should be showing up or what?

starting a new project - WP

I'm starting a new project with WordPress. I've been going thru the admin section and seeing what it's all about. I have a question or 2 about this new project of mine. 1. my new project

no nore wordpress project. no replies please.
  16. I've been searching the forums and came close a few times, but no go. Maybe I've missed something...maybe this has been solved in other threads and I'm just not seeing it.... in any case, is there an easy way to find duplicates of people and families? instead of going through one record at a time? is there like a mod that will run a report or something like that? I just need to check and fix/merge before I start migrating to the live site. Thanks a mil everyone!
  17. Hello everyone. Hope this finds you all doing well. ok, I do all my data entry in TNG on my local wampserver. This past week I've been changing names and optimizing for the web, documents, headstones and photos. Now I'm tasked to doing all the data entry for all those files, ie, description, link to person, etc. once I have that part of the project done locally, I'll export a gedcom file (create a backup first...) then import it into the live site. on the live site i already have populated the documents, headstones and photos folders and generated thumbnails. I should be ok with this method? if not, which approach should i take? Thanks everyone.

    The new look of TNG

In todays market, TNG would need to lift it's game, if it wanted to stay competitive, in the future Family Tree market. The terms Male and Female, now no longer apply, so additions would need to be added to appeal to the L,G,B,T,Q,I mob and the other H,D,O,Z,W,X brigade. Either an updated drop down menu in the get-person creation, or a space to add your own identity, or identity of. Then of course, you have those that don't identify as either Male or Female, they simply acknowledge themselves as being "Non-Binary". They would much rather be identified as a Toaster or a Breville Snack Maker. I'm not sure if @Darren has thought of it, or about it, but first horse out of the gate, normally wins the race. Would certainly put TNG out in front.

New tng site up and running

Hello and a happy new year to you all. I've decided to go live at this time (although it was live). It's 90% complete as far as cosmetics, how I wanted to design it and all. Still have a butt-load of data entry to do, but this will work for me and I hope you like it. If you visit, please report anything you see wrong, I'm open for comments and tips. https://www.joneshyman.org Thank you for your time.
  20. I have several family trees on my website. Is it possible to link a name from "family tree A" to a person from "Family tree B"?
  21. Hi everyone, I have several individuals in my family tree who originate from Northern Ireland (Portadown) Anyone any suggestions regarding good online sources for Church records and Civil Registration records? Since Napoleon never set foot in England, Civil Registration most likely started later in comparison to the rest of Europe. If I would plan to go to Northern Ireland (Portadown) what would be the best place to start visiting if I want to look for Church records and Civil Registration records? Kind regards and stay safe, Rob

Can anyone help Restore my Site?

Hi folks - My late brother spent a decade or two building a geneology website, and we've lost it (the hosting service deleted it after missed payments). I have his files, tons of backups and a new Domain name, but don't know how to proceed from here. I can pay $$ to someone that's interested in geneology and preserving family histories. -Mark
  23. This is a study of the Culbert surname worldwide, supported by the Guild of One-Name Studies. The home page has been modified to facilitate mobile access.
  24. I have suddenly find out that many of my source links to church records are disappeared. I do not know when it has happnend. I have looked in the citations.bak files back to 2016 but the missing links not found. When I make a birth registration I go to Sources, Edit Action and do the registration of text and the link in Actual Text field. In the early days I made the registration in the Notes field. I think that most of the missing links has been registrated in the Notes field. Is that the problem? I use both http and https links. Is it possible to make a script or something to find the missing links? I have over 10.000 persons. Best Peter Skjoldhoj
  25. Hello, I am new to the forum and I have TNG v. 12.2. I am using the mod "Admin Thumbnails" 12.0.0.4a. I am using Wamp Version 3.1.9 - 64bit on my laptop. I installed Admin Thumbnails because I was having problems with making thumbnails for many of images. I had originally the setting for max image size for thumbnails at 2000, I have now set it to 10000. The reason I have done this is because I was and still have problems generating thumbnails. All my media is from Ancestry.com, I downloaded the gedcom from the tree I wanted from the most updated Family Tree Maker 2017. I transferred all my media from Family tree maker 2017 to the Wamp>TNG>www>photos folder. Each picture can be viewed on a mouse over with the dead link thumbnail icon on the admin media folder. Some of the thumbnails have showed up aside for maybe 30+ images out of 399. I have used ADMIN Thumbnails mod to try to regenerate the thumbnails repeatedly and nothing has worked. I tick the Regenerate existing thumbnails box and Regenerate thumbnail path names where file does not exist. I have even tried both at the same time. No luck... Any suggestions? Thank You
