Hi All, I am new to TNG and have just set up our genealogy site. When I loaded up the Gedcom file the Dad's side and Mom's side is wrong. It's as if the system is using my mother as the starting point. Is there a way to correct this? Thanks in advance, Dave

Set Notes/Events to "not public" - available to logged in users only
LJLachance posted a topic in Installation and Configuration
As my actual database (not TNG) contains stories and notes. I have chosen NOT to export them to TNG via gedcom, however, all events for individuals ARE exported and appear on individual pages. This would be items like "obituary", "medical notes", "fact events", "hospital", "funeral home", etc. All of this shows on "public" pages. Is there a way to keep this information available BUT set it such that ONLY a registered user would be able to view the information. Apologies if the answer is here already, just can't find it. -
Is it possible to import a GEDCOM file from the command line? So I can script the import when I export from my main database? I have TNG 12 on an Ubuntu server.

I have looked around and I am sure this has been asked many times...I am starting from scratch due to my hosting account being hacked. I downloaded my GEDCOM from Ancestry which I had spent many hours researching and documenting my family history and added a large amount of media. When I downloaded the Ancestry file, and uploaded it to TNG, non of the media came with it. Instead, it shows a generic icon and it links back to Ancestry to download a document ...or more frustrating is a file name on the TNG site (see below) Some of these photos I no longer have. Is there some way to DL from ancestry to include the media files......or some sort of work around? Over the years, I have used several PC's and I would have to search all of them individually to try and recreate what I had. Many thanks, Dan

I am creating a new version of my TNG website and testing it on my wampserver before deploying it. I converted a Family Tree Maker 2017 gedcom file using the gedcom_converter_v12.0.0.13 and placename_format_v12.0.0.4 mods. I am very pleased with the result. Particularly the ability to import 'citation' links which show up as thumbnail-media-links right below the relevant source citations in the 'Sources' section of an individual's page. I think this looks cool and would also be convenient for anyone trying to understand what my sources were rather than just a written citation. I would be 100 percent happy if not for one vexing problem. When I click any of these links, the media displays as it should, but then there are two PHP errors at the bottom of the page. Warning: mysqli_free_result(): Couldn't fetch mysqli_result in C:\wamp64\www\mywebsite\tng\tngconnect.php on line 81 Warning: mysqli_fetch_assoc(): Couldn't fetch mysqli_result in C:\wamp64\www\mywebsite\tng\tngconnect.php on line 50 Of course, the file size of this media is very large and I intend to take care of that later, but that has nothing to do with the errors. In fact, if I deleted all the 'citation' links to this media and just left a 'person' link, the errors would go away, but then the thumbnails will not display below the citations either. I know very little about PHP, but I suspect that the errors are probably caused by my PHP configuration with my wampserver, but that is only a guess. I hate to upload this to my actual website and still see these errors there. In my wampserver, I checked PHP > PHP extensions > and there I see 'php_mysqli' checked, so that means it's alright?? Right? My php version is 5.6.38 and the TNG Diagnostics tab shows all green checks. TNG V12.1 My hope is that someone with greater knowledge than I will be able to help me solve this problem for which I would be very grateful https://thebrownfamilytree.info .

Simple SEO Mod v6 - Meta keyword support for any custom event, HTML encoding
Bill Herndon posted a topic in Addons
I have released Simple SEO versions 11.0.0.6 (TNG 11.0+), 11.1.0.6 (TNG 11.1), and 11.1.1.6 (TNG 11.1.1+). This version changes the way in which meta keywords are generated, using a list of GEDCOM tags instead of individual tags in the mod parameters. So now...any custom event's value can be added to meta keywords by adding its GEDCOM tag to the list. Aliases (tag: ALIA) and nicknames (tag: NICK) are supported by default. Other useful tags might include occupation (tag: OCCU) or married name (commonly _NAMM). Individual names and nicknames entered in TNG still have built-in support. This version also adds HTML encoding to keyword values to correct cases where a quoted nickname or other instances of special characters are included in a name or event value. This version is optional for Simple SEO mod users. Please see the Simple SEO Wiki page for additional information. Bill Herndon Lindell-Herndon Genealogy -
Hi all - We are seeing a strange thing happening with external links to images. After importing the ancestry.com gedcom the media items appear to be correctly linked to their respective People and Families. However, the button to "View item..." is not appearing. I'll try to describe the behavior with a bunch of screen snips. (main Question is at end of this post.) This first image shows what is happening when viewing the photo. The external photo is not loading. I'm not really worried about the filename not showing the entire URL. This is likely because Ancestry doesn't allow it. That's fine but isn't the problem. In the Edit screen TNG shows the full URL and the "external checkbox" unselected. When I click the external checkbox the URL field is blanked out. After I either, 1) leave the box unchecked and paste in the Owner/Source, or 2) check the box and re-paste the Media URL I get the View Item... button as expected. My question is: Is there a way to correct the condition where these external links are not displaying the View Item button correctly? ///Bob

Hi there, I contribute to a RM-7 database that interfaces, for people like me, to the internet via TNG 12.0.3. On occasion, I like to aggregate research from this database with content in the FamilySearch Family Tree. What I notice, if I manually download a 4-generation GEDCOM via TNG and manually upload same to FamilySearch Family Tree, is that the sources aren't listed and therefore also aren't linking to facts in FamilySearch Family Tree. Just to be clear though, these sources ARE apparent in TNG and properly associated with their respective facts. [EDIT....... New info since posting this 15 min ago..........] I just chatted with Diana via RootsMagic website "chat" feature. She tells me this is a known issue that can't be resolved until FamilySearch fixes its application programming interface (API). What options does this leave us in the interim? Until this API issue is resolved at FamilySearch, or maybe even after; I oftentimes wonder if there's potential for an automatic or semi-automatic means of providing a FamilySearch Family Tree person profile with a URL that is unique to an individual's profile on a TNG website (where primary sources may be more plentiful). Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Hello again, I really like the TNG website builder and I have started to build my site!! I have imported a Gedcom from Family Historian 6, I have customized the template page with my photos and I have linked the mapping tool. Fantastic. However, I am having a few problems with attaching my media files to the sources on TNG. I have setup an identical directory structure in TNG as I have in FH6 (screen dump attached) I did the following..... Copied across FH6 Media Directory in full to Photo directory Regenerated Gedcom in FH6 Deleted my current tree in TNG Set up new tree in TNG Reimported Gedcom via import facility in TNG…...all fine so far! Go to Media.....opened a source - Andrews Newspaper Cards and in the file name on site window it is showing "edia/Death Record/DR Andrews Newspaper Cards William Hayward Jul 1884.JPG " (screen dump attached) Any ideas please why it is knocking off the "M" from Media? Have I missed something? Am I doing this right? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in anticipation PP

New Install over a previous installation with the same problems and more. I just could not get things working so I initiated a Scorched Earth Policy and wiped the folder and MySQL database. It didn't help This problem: 1. Page won't allow me to select either of the checkboxes, "Accept data for all new Custom Event Types Import Custom Event Types only (no data is added, replaced or appended)". See attached screenshot. 2. Therefore won't do anything with Uploading a GED whether from my Desktop or the Internal folder. My server is running ControlWeb Panel: CWP Pro 7. The PHP is presently PHP Version 5.6.37 but it could easily be upgraded through to 7.3 if there was a reason to do so. And this is what the Configure line looks like: Configure Command './configure' '--with-zlib' '--enable-soap' '--enable-exif' '--with-config-file-path=/usr/local/php' '--with-config-file-scan-dir=/usr/local/php/php.d' '--enable-phar' '--enable-bcmath' '--enable-calendar' '--with-curl' '--with-iconv' '--with-mysql' '--with-mysqli' '--with-mysql=mysqlnd' '--with-mysqli=mysqlnd' '--with-mcrypt' '--with-imap' '--with-imap-ssl' '--with-gettext' '--with-xmlrpc' '--with-pdo-mysql=mysqlnd' '--enable-posix' '--enable-ftp' '--with-openssl' '--enable-mbstring' '--with-jpeg-dir=/usr' '--with-freetype-dir=/usr' '--with-kerberos' '--with-xsl' '--with-bz2' '--enable-zip' '--with-gd' '--with-libdir=lib64' '--enable-sockets' '--with-pcre-regex' '--with-mysql-sock=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' MySQL is MySQL version 10.1.39-MariaDB Browser is mostly Chrome (because something is broken in FF) but also FF at times. java version "1.8.0_191" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_191-b12) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 25.191-b12, mixed mode) Not sure what other information you need so please feel free to ask. Oh, I have managed sites and servers before, been playing with this stuff for far too many years. I just can't work out why this page won't let me select buttons and successfully load up a GED.

Hello All, I am a new user of TNG....Bought and installed the software and set up my website a couple of weeks ago....then I imported a Gedcom from Family Historian 6 and this worked very easily, apart from all my jpgs weren't attached to the sources...but I understand you have to bring them across manually? That's for another time!!! But now, I think I have introduced a more serious problem....that is, I have spent the last two weeks in the FH6 program tidying a few things up and today I ruled off with a new updated Gedcom. So here's the gist, I went on to my website and deleted the existing tree (through the tree delete option) and then I removed the old Gedcom file from my website all via Filezilla. I then moved the new Gedcom to my site via Filezilla. Then I used the Import gedcom facility from the website. I chose pick file from website, custom sources, added new tree info, selected all current data, import media if present and import long and lat data. Run import......the import window comes up and then it looks like something initially happens and then I have left the pc for an hour or so (twice) and nothing is happening If I look at the Tree Option on the website, my new tree is there nearly 7GB, but no data / people registered? I really want this to work but I admit I am struggling (not a programmer, but not pc illiterate either!) Any ideas please? Many thanks PP

I have GEDCOMs from two different cousins. We want to create one large tree in TNG software. Each GEDCOM has the same records but one GEDCOM has more custom events and other information listed for each record. How do I upload one GEDCOM, then upload the second GEDCOM so that it adds the additional information for the records already uploaded plus all the additional records that it has. One GEDCOM has 5,000 entires and the other has 15,000. Do I upload the larger or the smaller first and what choices do I make as far as to replace data or accept data. The GEDCOM with 5,000 has more complete records for each person and the GEDCOM with 15,000 has more people but the records are not as complete. I am using version 12.1 of TNG on an iMac running Mojave 10.14.4

I am unable to export a gedcom file from TNG 12.1. When I select GEDCOM export it runs for a while then I get this message "If the export fails to run to completion, click here to resume". When I do that, it advances a few more lines and I get the same message. I stopped doing that when the items in the content got to item P200760. I am guessing that the export uses "P" instead of "I" for an individual - but I have less than 6000 people. https://royroyes.net

Anyone knowledgeable about the Gedcom Converter mod and why it does not work properly? Fatal error: Unsupported operand types in /home4/hopemetzler/public_html/genealogy/admin_filepicker.php on line 137 I just want to simply work on my genealogy in Family Tree Maker 2017 and occasionally upload my work: scanned documents, photos, latest tree, to the web. But it seems that FTM 2017 does not work with TNG at all. I thought the mod would make the transition smooth. Anyone have experience with this? TIA! Hope

Hi, When I try to do a GEDCOM export I get the following error: An error has occurred in the TNG software. This could be due to a setup issue, an incomplete upgrade or a program bug. Through some testing I've found even if a user has the Allow to download GEDCOMs checkbox clicked, they don't have access Import/Export screen UNLESS they also have Add, Edit, and Delete any data rights. I can see where admin equivalency would be required for importing a gedcom. But for exporting, it seems like non-admin users could be given the export right, perhaps with the option to restrict the export of living individuals. Thanks. -Kurt

I am a new user! I have successfully set up a TNG (v. 12.3) site with one branch of my family by importing a GEDCOM. I use RootsMagic (v.7.5.9.0). I am trying to plan for the future (I know that is a little funny, but I at least want to try!) My question is about how TNG treats an updated GEDCOM after the site is set up. If I upload a GEDCOM with all the people in my RootsMagic tree, then make changes in RootsMagic and upload a revised GEDCOM, will everything be changed or will TNG recognize the new information and only change that? If I upload a GEDCOM with all the people in my RootsMagic tree, then make changes in TNG, and then upload a second RootsMagic GEDCOM with different changes, will the changes that I made in TNG be undone? Or will TNG recognize which change is the most recent? I have a lot of media files. It will take me years to properly link them to the people in my tree. I'm trying to figure out if I can set up TNG so that my cousins can be administrators of their own branch and add media, but I can still upload my RootsMagic GEDCOMs without changing their work. Thanks for your help. Peggy Freeedman

Hi, I am quite new to TNG, so please excuse me if my question is answered in a help file somewhere. I have been using the My Heritage "family site". I have many photos and documents which are attached to people. When I export a GEDCOM, My Heritage produces something like this for each photo: 1 OBJE 2 FORM jpg 2 FILE https://www.myheritageimages.com/C/storage/site126006541/files/50/05/29/500529_478549db72lf527xe05rar.jpg 2 TITL Sinclair -- Arthurson marriage When I subsequently import the file into TNG, the photos are all there, in that each individual has the right number of photos, and I can view them. However, they haven't been imported. TNG just keeps the link, and displays the photo which is still over on the My Heritage site. The photos subfolder is empty. How can I get the photos imported and tell TNG to throw out the link? I haven't been able to generate thumbnails, either, but that is probably related to this problem.

Error when trying to import GEDCOM after upgrade to V12.0.2
Richard Murray posted a topic in Installation and Configuration
I've just upgraded to Version 12 from Version 8 and am getting an error when I attempt to select a GEDCOM to import from my website GEDCOM folder. When I hit the "select" button on the Admin Import/Export screen, it produces the following error message: Warning: Unknown: It is not safe to rely on the system's timezone settings. You are *required* to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected 'America/New_York' for 'EST/-5.0/no DST' instead in /home/rmurra6/public_html/admin_filepicker.php on line 359Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '[' in /home/rmurra6/public_html/admin_filepicker.php on line 359 Any guidance on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. One additional bit of info - I noticed that there is no "index.html" file in my GEDCOM folder, just my GEDCOM. Am I missing something? -
Until the past few days, I was running version 10, but have now upgraded to version 12. I maintain my primary data on my home computer, using Family Historian. Once or twice a month, by exporting a gedcom from my Family Historian software, I upload the updated gedcom to my The Next Generation web site for public consumption. For uploading and installing the new gedcom, I use The Next Generation Import/Export function under Administrative options. Until a few months back, when I imported the gedcom, the Import/Export function would upload the file and then, after a short delay, the progress bar would appear and the import and installation would be completed. At some point a few months back, the automatic progress bar and install stopped working. This then required me to actually select the uploaded gedcom file in order to start the install. Now, after the install of version 12, the automatic start of the progress bar install still does not start, but I was also unable to get the install to start by going to the web site gedcom directly. Using the uploaded gedcom file directly, I WAS able to finally get the install to take place by selecting the "Old Style Import" option on the Import/Export Gedcom page in The Next Generation Version 12. I wonder if I am the only person with this problem, and perhaps more helpfully, does anyone have any suggestions about how to return to full functionality with regard to the gedcom import function? When I do an Export from the Gedcom Import/Export screen in TNG, none of the LDS data goes to the Gedcom file. However, when I pull an individual up and use the Gedcom tab on that screen, check the "Include LDS Info", the LDS data is included in the Gedcom. Of course I want to export all records in the TNG file. I'm running tng version 11.1.1 Any help appreciated...Sam

Information: Destination: TNG 12.0.02 - Template #1 Source: Legacy 9.0.0.226 - Database: 74,000 + people - GEDCOM types tried: Legacy, 5.5.1 only, basic - ANSI & UTF-8 Equipment: HP Laptop - Windows 10 - Chrome browser - Filezilla FTP Server Side: PHP 5.5.38 - MYSQL 5.5.5-10.0.36 When trying to install the first time I let the GEDCOM run for about 24 hrs because I had read that large files may take a very long time. While running the import the activity shown at the bottom of the screen looked good; waiting for host, processing request, connecting... etc. After 24 hrs I stopped the Import and clicked on People in the Administration Menu, it showed only 446 people imported in the database! I deleted all 446 people and tried the above flavors of GEDCOM's, the total never went above 446 people. In digging deeper into the Forum I was surprised at the number of MODs there are; my initial reaction was this software is for programmers and hackers not users (like me). I have used about a dozen genealogy software programs and they have all been more-or-less plug and play; including, the now unsupported PHPGedview. Some of the MODs that looked like what I need require a completed install. I have been trying everything I can think of for 5 days, 16 hrs a day with zero progress. So, here I am making my plea for ideas and assistance. I downloaded GEDCOM Validator and ran it against the above GEDCOMs and if it is correct the GEDCOMs don't do very well meeting the standards and specs for GEDCOMs. The idea of this TNG software is fabulous and ticks all the boxes of what I want in a genealogy software. Thanks, Larryw

I decided to switch on importing addresses related to events when I did my last update, and noticed an odd result. It appears where the imported address in the GEDCOM has more than 4 standard elements (ADR1, CITY, STAE, CTRY), the way it is being converted adds duplicated elements. It also appears as though, when the STAE is missing, similar odd formatting occurs. This can be observed here on my site (whakapapa.gen.nz). The address for the 1861 census appears as expected. The GEDCOM relating to this appears to be: 1 CENS 1861 England 2 DATE 7 Apr 1861 2 PLAC Islington, Middlesex, England 2 ADDR n/a 3 CONT 5 Trinity Street 3 CONT Islington, Middlesex England 3 _NAME n/a 3 ADR1 5 Trinity Street 3 CITY Islington 3 STAE Middlesex 3 CTRY England However for the 1871 census, I get: The GEDCOM for this is: 1 CENS 1871 England 2 DATE 2 Apr 1871 2 PLAC Islington, Middlesex, England 2 ADDR n/a 3 CONT 3 Jordan Walk 3 CONT Elder Place 3 CONT Islington, Middlesex England 3 _NAME n/a 3 ADR1 3 Jordan Walk 3 ADR2 Elder Place 3 CITY Islington 3 STAE Middlesex 3 CTRY England For some reason it has duplicated the CITY after the STAE. There are other examples on the same page, with the 1841 and 1851 censuses, and the Aug 1861 residence, so it is not simply related to census events. On Emma's father-in-law's page here, there are other similar issues. In this case the 1861 census address has picked up more than just the CITY as extra text. 1 CENS 1861 England 2 DATE 7 Apr 1861 2 PLAC Newington, Surrey, England 2 ADDR n/a 3 CONT Brunswick Place 3 CONT Newington 3 CONT Surrey England 3 _NAME n/a 3 ADR1 Brunswick Place 3 ADR2 Newington 3 STAE Surrey 3 CTRY England And in the 1871 census, again some odd results 1 CENS 1871 England 2 DATE 2 Apr 1871 2 PLAC London, England 2 ADDR n/a 3 CONT 12 Clarence Gardens 3 CONT London England 3 _NAME n/a 3 ADR1 12 Clarence Gardens 3 CITY London 3 CTRY England However, as noted above, where the address has four elements, and only four elements (ADR1, CITY, STAE, CTRY), it formats as would be expected. There are some other variations on this on this page. The education address is odd. As in the cases above, it has dropped the _NAME, and with no STAE done some duplicating. 1 EDUC 2 DATE Bet 1941 and 1945 2 PLAC Palmerston North, New Zealand 2 ADDR Palmerston North Boys' High School 3 CONT Featherston Street 3 CONT Palmerston North New Zealand 3 _NAME Palmerston North Boys' High School 3 ADR1 Featherston Street 3 CITY Palmerston North 3 CTRY New Zealand However, the Residence address HAS used the _NAME, and despite there being no STAE has formatted as would be expected. 1 RESI 2 DATE 1949 2 PLAC Palmerston North, New Zealand 2 ADDR 83 Wood Street 3 CONT Palmerston North New Zealand 3 _NAME 83 Wood Street 3 CITY Palmerston North 3 CTRY New Zealand This all leads me believe it is something in the import process, rather than in the GEDCOM. Has anyone else had this problem, and/or are there any ideas on how to tidy it up? Thanks Roger
