  1. Hi, I update my site weekly via a gedcom import and have for ever been using 'replace all' when importing the gedcom. This successfully updates the individuals and families in my database with the new information, however as I discovered to my suprise, does not replace the places. I have the old place entries, new place entries and the 'cleanesed' place entries. Which other tables in the database does 'replace all' not replace all? Do any other power users have a script, list of tables, they 'clean' prior to a gedcom import? Thanks.
  2. I am creating a GEDCOM in TNG v11.0.2 for export to Roots Magic. All of my media items have titles (see attached example), but the GEDCOM file does not contain anything in the TITL field. Here are the corresponding lines from the GEDCOM: 0 @M6915@ OBJE 1 FORM JPG 1 FILE E:\RootsMagic\Kalt-Sperber\documents\mendel-manele-kalt-birth-record-1861.jpg 1 TITL 1 _TYPE PHOTO 1 NOTE Birth year is 1860, even though file name contains 1861. Titles are included in the GEDCOM file for source records, but not for any media files. Why am I not getting anything in the TITL field for any of my media files?
  3. I am trying to import a GEDCOM from FTM 2017 (but the same issue happens with the Mac FTM 3.1 version as well). Because of the way FTM exports sources, I have this as a result in TNG under "publisher": Name: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc.; Location: Lehi, UT, USA; Date: 2016; (I am using the generic source type since the ones based on templates do not work.) I don't mind that all being given in TNG as the publisher, but how can I strip out "Name:", "Location:" and "Date:" as well as the final semi-colon? Do I need to manually process the GEDCOM in a text editor first? I have tried putting all that into the Publisher Name field of the source in FTM, but again "Name:" and an extraneous semi-colon are generated. I am using the Gedcom Converter mod with the FTM conversion box ticked.
  4. I created a GEDCOM file for one of the branches in my tree. When I uploaded it to Ancestry.com and into Family Tree Maker I noticed several individuals missing. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this is because some of the Birth Relationships were missing and or the Branch was not selected when the individual was created or edited? I have a suspicion that without the Birth Relationship and/or the Branch indicated the relationship chain is broken and therefore it just leaves people out. Am I correct on that assumption? Also, is there a quick way to fix this like getting a list of individuals that show relationship and branch and just go through the list and fix them. Checking each individual through the edit individual option would be very time consuming with hundreds to check. Shouldn't TNG make some connection to all individuals in a tree/branch if these fields are not marked so the GEDCOM file gets everyone? Maybe it does and I'm missing something. Thank you for your help with this.
  5. Hi all, I see there is an option for capitalizing (uppercase) surnames on import but there doesn't seem to be an option to un-capitalize (lowercase) surnames on import. Or is there a facility on TNG where we can edit surnames quickly and easily. I am wanting to import a ged com with around 5000 individuals that has a mixture of both formats. I prefer that the surnames are displayed the way they are normally written (un-capitalized). Thanks in advance, Merv To clarify... I am wanting to convert surnames that are currently in ALL CAPS format to Initial Caps format.
  6. Upgraded from TNG 11.0 -> 11.1. After the install were all special letters in both admin pages and web-site wrong. (æ->vÃ; ø-> Ã,; ü-> ö). After reading on forum did I: Change TNG Administration -> Setup -> General setup -> Language -> changed Danish to Danish_UTF8 Change TNG Administration -> Setup -> Language -> Danish to Danish_UTF8 and English to English_UTF8 Changed phpMyAdmin (mySQL) -> General settings -> change Server connection collation from Latin1_danish_ci to utp8_danish_ci For all tabels, one at the time (e.g. tng_addresses) using Operations change Collation from Latin1_danish_ci to utp8_danish_ci (could not make the Phoca service tool to work) For all colums change Collation (e.g. ALTER TABLE see below) In Legacy v. 8.0.0.596 export to GEDCOM 5.5 using UTF8, verified using notepad++ that export was of UTF format ("CHAR UTF-8") From TNG Administration -> Import -> mark "Accept data for all new Custom Event Types" and Replace in selected tree marked "All current data" but still the æøü problem.. Then I switched to utf8_swedish_ci in the database and TNG Administration - still the same result... please help (I got most of the 'how to' from http://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php/Changing_to_UTF-8) SQL statement to change all tabels: ALTER TABLE `tng_addresses` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE `tng_albumlinks` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE `tng_albumplinks` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE `tng_albums` CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_associations CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_branches CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_branchlinks CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_cemeteries CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_children CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_citations CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_countries CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_dna_links CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_dna_tests CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_events CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_eventtypes CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_families CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_languages CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_media CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_medialinks CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_mediatypes CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_mostwanted CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_notelinks CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_people CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_places CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_reports CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_repositories CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_saveimport CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_sources CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_states CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_temp_events CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_timelineevents CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_trees CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_users CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci; ALTER TABLE tng_xnotes CONVERT TO CHARACTER SET utf8 COLLATE utf8_danish_ci;
  7. So I'm building my tree at Ancestry.com and go to export gedcom, save it to disc, then import it into my website. Everything looks fine, except on the media page it is only "links" to the media. The field for the location at Ancestry.com is filled in, but none of the media shows. Do I have to go and download all the media files one at a time, and import them individually into TNG? Please tell me there's a better way! Thanks!!
  8. My use of sources and citations has evolved over time as I have worked with genealogy software but I know I still have a long way to go. Needless to say my sources and citations are somewhat inconsistent and in need of a review and cleanup. I discovered Evidentia recently and was wondering if anyone else has been using it. If so, I would like to hear your thoughts and experiences. Particularly, if you use it, how do you integrate it into your workflow? Do you use it in a workflow with any desktop software such as Legacy or RM for example or even with TNG directly? What has been your experience? It seems to be an intriguing approach which I would like to explore. I have downloaded a trial version and hope to find time to play with it over the next couple of weeks. Harold
  9. I'm new to TNG but longtime Legacy user. There are multiple variants available for GEDCOM exports - Legacy, GEDCOM 5.5, PAF, Ancestral File, Pedigree Resource File, and Generic. Can anyone recommend the best option for import to TNG? Assuming 5.5 or Generic, but if one is known to be more successful I'd love to know in advance. Also, if there are any known issues with the process I'd really appreciate a heads up. I have looked through the forums but didn't see this particular topic addressed. Many thanks! Joan
  10. I have noticed a couple of cases where the "Cause of Death" information is incorrect. In both cases, the data in my Legacy 8 database had no cause of death for the individual, and no date of death, although both were flagged as dead. In each case I did have a cause of death for the father. In TNG a cause of death for both individuals had appeared, being the same as for their respective fathers. The import GEDCOM was correct; i.e., it did not have a cause of death for these individuals. What I suspect is that, in the import process, the lack of a date of death did not trigger a clearing of any cause of death variables, and thus the father's information remained as an artifact. However the behaviour is not entirely consistent (a brother of one of the individuals above, who similarly had no death details, did not inherit his father's cause of death. It isn't clear whether the order of the children (DOB or ID) has any bearing. I have not noticed any similar issues of persistence with other information, nor have I tested to see whether there are other cases (eg mother/daughter or similar) where this might arise. Maybe others have had similar observations?
  11. The fields "_UID" and "_Color" show under the details for individuals. Can I hide these from public view? Just makes for viewers confusion, I think.
  12. Hi, I am using TNG V11.0.2 with Template 5. My data is from Legacy V8.0 which I export using GEDCOM 5.5.1 format using UTF-8 character set. My web site requires persons to logon to see information on living persons. When I import the data into TNG I find that a considerable number of persons have been flagged as deceased which are still living, i.e. husband deceased and wife flagged as deceased which is incorrect. I also have a number of persons that do not have a birth or death date which are also flagged as deceased but I know they are living. This error also appears to occur randomly as not all instances appear to have been treated in this way. I have checked some of the records in my Legacy database and their settings are correct. I have manually changed some records in TNG but there are to many to go through. I have also changed some in TNG but they are still displayed as deceased and therefore their information is available to users without a logon. I have examined the GEDCOM file and can not see a Deceased/Living field. I have also imported the GEDCOM data into MS Excel and still can't find any flags that demonstrate their status. What information is TNG evaluating to determine the persons status? Has anybody else experienced the same and what is the solution because re-checking each record is not desirable? There are just to many records.

    Sources not importing

After about 10 attempts to import my gedcom I was able to get sources to load. Added new people to my tree, using FTM 2014 and Ancestry.com, these gedcoms don't upload completely. Partially imports persons, none of the sources or repositories. Had to convert through PAF5, finally got people imported, but not the sources and repositories. Set at "Replacing Matching Records Only". Upload process "hangs" after people import. Some people are missing spouses, parents and children, gives others 2 sets of parents. I've tried to import from my gedcom folder and folder on pc. I've cleared and deleted everything several times but continue to have partial or fouled imports. http://genealogy.wmpbrown.net/
  14. Recently, I have been unable to import a GEDCOM into TNG. It wasn't always like that. My logs said that the problem was a call to cal_days_in_month() in datelib.php. It was introduced by PHP 5. The recommended fix is to recompile PHP with calendar support. That is a bit beyond my ability, and it would break the consistency of my RPM-based Linux distro. A bit of hunting around produced the following workaround, which avoids the issue: Line 139 of datelib.php reads: $newday = cal_days_in_month(CAL_GREGORIAN, $newmonth, $newyear); Change that to $newday = date('t', mktime(0, 0, 0, $newmonth, $newyear)); After that, I was able to install a GEDCOM as before. I haven't found any consequential problems, so far. Doug.
  15. I imported a GEDCOM file sent to us from another TNG site. There were initially about 12-20 people in this tree, and then we imported a GEDCOM containing over 400 more family members (plus it contained the same 12-20 family members as his initial tree on our TNG site). I had to merge those 12-20 original people and families, and in the individual view, everything looks fine; just dandy. However, in the Ancestor view for person 1 (I1, Tree2), no ancestor links show. If you go to the next person up the tree (his parents), the ancestor links show up just fine. Any ideas what could be the problem and how to fix it? Here are some screenshots: 1. shows person1, tree2 with missing links to his parents and other ancestors (the ID Numbers at this level remained unchanged, though the individuals were merged). 2. shows that the ancestor links are there in the individual view. 3. shows that the ancestor links are there for his mother in the ancestor (compact) view; the way it should be for him as well. Using TNG 11.0.1, template15.
  16. Hi, I was importing a updated GEDCOM and I wiped out all my Census Tables that I created. I have two questions.. How do I restore the tables or do I create new ones I deleted them when I imported ok I goofed made a mistake.. Questions Two.. I thought I saw a posting how to Import from a GEDCOM with out wiping out your tables. I can find anything on GEDCOM and CPI Tables. I create custom Event for the Census.. I don't have the event defined in My Legacy program is there a WIKI or a Post with instructions how to Import a Gedcom without deleting your tables Thanks Jim
  17. The MyKindred.com site has over 190,000 people in the database and is generated by a 60MB gedcom. I began to notice the imports taking longer and longer some months ago, but now they no longer complete successfully. I attempt an import, it fails and I have to restore the tables from backup. My last successful import was over a month ago. I first assumed the problem was on my end. Below are some of the things I've done to troubleshoot: My web site is hosted by http://simplyhosting.net. I have four clients hosted there also (each on different servers). I used phpMyAdmin on my live site to "repair" and "optimize" the database tables. I created virgin "test" TNG-10 installations in subdomains on the client's sites as well as on the MyKindred.com site. Importing the same gedcom into two of these test installations works fine and quickly, less than 15 minutes -- and I'm able to use the "new" status bar import. The other two fail, even using the "old-style" import method. Each of these installations is on a different server, which leads me to think the problem is with the server. Since I can't control the server (and since simplyhosting has already moved the site to another server to try to fix this problem) -- and since I've annoyed the host's support staff with over 50 emails on this topic, I am here looking for suggestions and trying to figure out what I can do on my end to make this work. One thought is to compress the tables, though I suspect that is just a band-aid on the problem. There is a difference in the tables of the live install versus what is in the test installs importing from the same gedcom. Questions about the database tables: What is left untouched in the tables when doing an "All current data" import? What can be safely removed from the tables? .. and how to determine what that is? ... and will it make any difference? I know there are items in the tables that are not over-written by the gedcom import, and I suspect some of them are no longer needed. For example, when I change a place name, is it removed in the table or is it left there and the new name just added to the table? I am considering having a local install do the import, creating backups or SQL dumps using phpMyAdmin and then importing the tables into the live web site tables. What an inelegant solution that would be. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I suspect I'm overlooking something. (TNG 11 seems to import better, but I can't upgrade to it right now). (I also have clients hosted on godaddy.com and hostgator.com but see no need to check out these hosts as I want to stay with simplyhosting.) Tom
  18. Does anyone know how to import (from gedcom) HTML anchor tags (i.e. links or URLs) that are embedded in comments? Example: 1 NOTE See <a href="http://somesite.com/index.html">Biography</a> for more info. TNG strips HTML tags replacing "<" with &lt; and ">" &gt;. I am willing to modify the gedcom -- it I only knew how to properly encode the links. thanks, Tom P.S. It would also be nice to be able to embed HTML formatting into Notes in the gedcom -- e.g. <b>This is important</b>
  19. I Updated my site couple of weeks ago to 11.01 and was not able to import a gedcom. Paritally loaded after severall hours, so missing a lot of familes, so the database is corrupted somehow. What to do now. Klaas

How long to load 18m file

the gedcom file I am trying to upload is 17+m created from rootsmagic. 48000+ individuals. How long will it take to load; it had been running for 30+ minutes and I stopped it. 10,000 people in the data base. Should it take this long? The first time Darrin loaded the file from a gedcom created by TMG. Running 11.0.1 I thought using a Rootsmagic gedcom would be better.
  21. I’ve installed the new TNG v11.0 and started importing GEDCOM file from a server directory (my hoster company name is 1and1) If “Import media if present” is checked - import stops (freezes) at the first record referencing to a media (independent on any other import options) without any message. This is independent on the record type (INDI, FAM, SOUR, …) and type of media file referenced (jpg, gif,…) Media records in my GEDCOM file: Always “level 1” (i.e., inside of a “level 0” record). Only filename (no path). No mediatype defined. Always like this: I successfully use TNG and import GEDCOMs for years. I would try debugging more deep, but need help or advice for this (which files are involved? php or js?). Any guidance appreciated. mjaro

    nginx

The last couple days I've been experiencing something new to me. It seems to occur when I am updating the gedcom and working with families. When I import a new gedcom from my desktop, the import seems to be in a loop and doesn't complete. When I click on the stop function, it appears that everything has imported OK. But then when I go to the Secondary Processes and attempt to "Sort Children" everything times out and I get a blank page with the following error message: "404 Not Found nginx/1.8.1" If I understand correctly nginx is a replacement for Apace? I'm using TNG 10.0.3 and my web-site is on an Apace server. My initial question is this: Is the error coming from my Apache server or am I missing a file from TNG? Again this is a recent error and seems like it should be easy to fix, but I don't know where to start. CarlWGray http://carlwgraycom

    Media Folders

Hello, I've produced a gedcom and after examination, I see the links to media files to be as follows: "3 FILE \\Mac\Home\Documents\Genealogy\Legacy Genealogy Files\media\Photos\pichette,stephanie3.jpg" or "2 FILE \\Mac\Home\Documents\Genealogy\Legacy Genealogy Files\media\Sources\pichette,guym1.jpg" Please notice the Photos & Sources folders. I use different folders for my media in Legacy Family Tree 8 (Genealogy Software). Will TNG be able to associate all my media files if I keep the same folder trees in the PHOTOS folder on the server or must I copy all my Source images into the Photos folder? In Sources, I have censuses, headstones, certificates, death cards - anything that isn't a picture. Also, TNG states that I must use the GEDCOM 5.5 as upload format, I don't see it when exporting from Legacy. What do I use? I haven't been able to upload at all. I'm at day 1 of purchase of TNG11. When uploading a gedcom (with 60 individuals or 15000 - it doens't make a difference) it just hangs and gives me an error. The error states that I should upload my gedcom to the server - but it is in the Gedcom folder of the server! I thought this would be an easier. Thanks for any help. Jean
  24. Is it possible to restrict certain features, such as gedcom downloads, mods, etc. to registered members while allowing un-registered guests to view the basic tree?
