Scandinavian capital letters in surname

Hi all,

this is my first post and I would first like to thank you for a fantastic product. I've installed ver.8 from fresh and it works fine and performs a lot better then expected :-D

So, to my little problem. There's an option in TNG to chosse to show all surnames in capital letters, which I'm using. It works fine apart from the norwegian Æ, Ø and Å which it displays as normal lower case letters æ, ø and å.

The installation is fully UTF-8 and I do not have this problem elsewhere.

What can I do to fix this?

If I go to this page

http://www.myroots.no/tng/surnames-all.php?tree=MyRoots

I see this name

OLSON SÆLE

with the Æ showing as expected and this name

CHRISTIANSON PETERØD

with the Ø

all in upper case as expected. Do you see something different?

Roger

Yes, I can see the same as you, maybe because all letters are in capital, I don't know.

But if you look at http://www.myroots.no/tng/search.php?mylas...mp;tree=MyRoots I have a difference in the letters.

OK - and I see it here too

http://www.myroots.no/tng/getperson.php?pe...mp;tree=MyRoots

But I'm unable to duplicate it here on my testing site

http://testing.lisaandroger.com/getperson....&tree=Roger

and searching for SÆLE works as expected

http://testing.lisaandroger.com/search.php...ualify=contains

works as well.

What is the collation your database is set to (look at it with phpMyAdmin to find this out).

If you Edit one of those people and make sure that it's SÆLE in the name, and save it, does that change get remembered, or does it come out as lowercase ae?

When a save the surname in CAPITAL letters it shows up as all capital, no problems. The problem is that all the surnames are saved as per normal, ie. Sæle, and it will be a big task to change them all.

The collation is set to UTF8-general, there's no option for UTF8-norwegian, believe it or not :-? Is this the problem?

I don't have any problems leaving the surnames in a normal state, but since TNG hars the option to make it all capitals I thought I'll give it a go.

Ahhh OK - I didn't realise you'd actually entered them as lower case and were choosing to display as upper case...

I can repeat that on my site, so it seems like it's an issue with TNG in changing the lower to upper case of that character æ (and maybe others too) - it seems like they're not being converted correctly to upper case when they're written to the tng_people table.

I've sent a note to Darrin about this, including a link to this thread so he can see progress so far.

A fix for this has been found and I've tested the changes Darrin made - it all seems to work now.

The fix should be available from the TNG Downloads page, as part of a revised Patch 8.0.0 file by tomorrow (Thursday 17 June) morning.

The Patch 8.0.0 download has been updated to include the fix for this. Go back to the TNG 8 downloads page and download it.

Patch downloaded and installed, everything works as it should. Great job, thanks

I have the same problem in V9, but can't find the fix at the download page.

Anyone that can send a link ?

That patch file was a temporary fix in TNG 8 until the fix was included in the full version.

A link to a page on your site showing the problem would be very helpful - including details to log in if that is needed.

What settings do you have for language and character set on your site?

Sorry for the lack of information. The surnames I've imported from a gedcom-file have the same behaviour: capital ÆØÅ are displayed as æøå. The ones I've made directly in TNG are ok. Unforthnually I can't show you the page, because I use a local server with no connection to www.

My TNG is setup with danish ISO-8859-1...

hopefylly this can help...

I have the exact same problem, link to site here:

As stated at the top of this thread, the problem arises when entering surnames in lower case letters, and having the program converting them to capital letters. When they're written in capital letters in the database, this is not an issue.

Like the person above, I use the ISO-8859-1 but in norwegian. I haven't tried changing the standard to UTF8 yet, mostly because I'm unsure how to do this (used the readme.html file when setting it up, but I've deleted that file now).
