Frederick Humphreys
Greetings,I'm still hung up on my earlier question that got lots of dialog, but seems to remain unanswered. I don't see a way for TNG members to search other TNG websites. This would be a helpful function to see if other members have conducted research along similiar tracks. I'm not talking about google or other search engines, I'm refering to a function within TNG - for TNG subscribers.Thanks,Fredhttp://www.frederickhumphreys.netwww.frederick.humphreys@verizon.net

I think a subscription service is the way to go. I imagine that just having it be subscription based would reduce traffic significantly. Perhaps this would eliminate the need for a dedicated server. If not, I personally would be willing to subscribe to a reasonably priced fee based service.Bryan

Palerider
Hi FrederickI agree with you sometimes it's easier to have a look at what others are doing visually as the technical language talked on this forum is restrictive for newbies. I often search the user sites such as they are for ideas. Another good idea would be to provide a search of member sites for surnames who knows a member might be related.Andyhttp://www.murieorigins.com
Frederick Humphreys
Andy,I could not agree more and I would appreciate it if TNG had that capacity - within TNG.Let me add, your site is a nice piece of workmanship.Fredhttp://frederickhumphreys.netHi FrederickI agree with you sometimes it's easier to have a look at what others are doing visually as the technical language talked on this forum is restrictive for newbies. Jodi Sweere
Hi Frederick,Perhaps your post here is causing confusion.Greetings,I don't see a way for TNG members to search other TNG websites. This would be a helpful function to see if other members have conducted research along similiar tracks. I'm not sure what you mean by "TNG members". TNG is software that you buy and install. The purchase of this software does not include a "membership" or "subscription" to anything. TNG is a stand alone program that one installs on a hosted domain for the purpose of displaying one's genealogy on a website. An individual who purchases TNG is often referred to as a "TNG User". Within TNG Admin, under "Getting Started" there are several links for TNG Users to get help setting up TNG on their site, which includes this forum, the TNG wiki (which has other resources for searching under the Gendex entry that I linked to above), and under "Other Resources" two links to the TNG Users email lists, which you may choose to subscribe to.In every TNG installation there is a link to the TNG software website in the footer. If you visit this website there is a link in the top horizontal menu called "User Sites" which takes you to a page of links that Darrin has provided of sites created by TNG Users.~Jodi

Jodi Sweere
Mmm that wasn't a patronising response from an "advanced member" at all....Hello "Palerider",The information I gave above is detailed and complete. Palerider
Hello to you too JodiI agree that your response was detailed and accurate my point is that not everyone who joins the forum is well schooled in the technicalities of TNG or how to form questions for the forum (I include me in that). Many users join the forum to find out how to install or improve their sites and getting around Wiki and the forum can be both difficult and daunting. The users, particularly the advanced members and those with technical expertise are much appreciated but sometimes the responses can be rather curt.Andy aka Palerider
Ken Roy
Hello "Palerider",The information I gave above is detailed and complete. I don't have to take time out of my busy day to answer questions in this forum, but I do. Comments like yours make me feel like I'm wasting my time.~JodiJodi,I think you missed the whole point. The gendex search on Darrin's TNG Network is down. See Post #7 in the following TNG Forum thread. While the information you provide is complete and accurate. The fact is that Darrin has taken the Gendex capability out of service for the time being, since it was exceeding the capacity allocated to it. I made the suggestion that maybe it was time to consider having a subscription service for the Gendex capability.Fred,Since you are wanting the gendex capability, maybe you should send an email directly to Darrin, or better yet pose the question on the User2 list, which might generate additional discussion on making Gendex search a subscription service.Ken
Jodi Sweere
Everyone,Thank you for your comments. It appears I've asked my questions in the wrong venue.FredHi Frederick,This is certainly the right venue to ask questions. I'm sorry if I can't give you the answer you expect. A single TNG installation searches the information in the database(s) associated with that single installation. There are hundreds of TNG Users, each with their own database(s). The information in those databases belongs to the TNG User who owns the database. Many TNG Users have privacy settings configured to prevent searching of their data or even viewing their pages. There is no way to search other TNG User's sites from "within" your own single TNG installation unless you create, install and configure your own method for that purpose, and receive permission from the other TNG Users to access their database(s).Gendex is a method for TNG Users to give other TNG Users permission to access each others databases for the purpose of sharing.I hope this helps.~Jodi

I also read the wiki article before I posted the link to it here. While it may be true that Gendex is down, the Family Tree Seeker toolbar cited in that article is still working as far as I can tell. ~Jodi

I was new at this once, too. Most advanced users become advanced users because they are able to focus concisely and not waste time on things that don't matter.I try to to keep my answers "concise". I'm sorry if you perceive that as "curt".No one here is trying to be rude. And now, I have just wasted time telling you that and this thread is wandering off-topic because I don't want you to feel like someone doesn't care about your feelings. We care, or we wouldn't be answering your questions.~Jodi
