Google Maps: Pins not displaying properly

Recommended Posts

Darrell

The pins are not displaying properly on any of my Google Maps. I have a key and have entered it, and the maps appear to all be displaying properly, however where the pins are supposed to be shown, only the shadows are displayed. I've checked and everything appears to me to be installed correctly. What do I need to do to correct this issue?

The following source code is for a map that is supposed to display two pins, one for a birth event and one for a burial event. The map displays properly, but only the two pin shadows are displayed:

<li id="eventmap" style="list-style-type: none; ">

<table border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="4" width="100%">

<tr valign="top"><td class="fieldnameback indleftcol" id="eventmap1"><span class="fieldname">Event Map</span></td>

<td class="databack" width="65%">

<div id="map" style="width: 100%; height: 400px;"></div>

</td>

<td class="databack"><span class="normal">Event<br /></span><table cellpadding="4">

Can you provide a link to the page your block of code came from? The problem isn't in that chunk of code, but down at the bottom of the page.

My guess though is that if you look in the file mapconfig.php you'll find this block of lines

$pinplacelevel0 = "006";
$pinplacelevel1 = "009";
$pinplacelevel2 = "023";
$pinplacelevel3 = "038";
$pinplacelevel4 = "074";
$pinplacelevel5 = "122";
$pinplacelevel6 = "155";

except that there are no values between the "" where the 3 digit numbers should be.

the page link is:

http://members.ofclanjenkins.com/Genealogy...mp;tree=Jenkins

you'll need htaccess: Login: tngforumuser Pass: guest

I don't think you'll need tng user, but just in case: Login: tnguser Pass: guest

I did check the mapconfig.php file, even before I posted here, and as far as I can tell, it has everything properly in place. The pin place levels are there, exactly as shown in the example code above.

Well it seems like the code on the page is all OK - all of the source code from your page saved to a file on my server shows up here OK...

http://testing.lisaandroger.com/darrell.html

and the pins draw as expected.

And the pin is where it's supposed to be on your site

http://members.ofclanjenkins.com/Genealogy...glemaps/006.png

But if I right click on a missing pin on the right to Open that image in a new window I get

Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@members.ofclanjenkins.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Are you able to see the Server Error Log to see what might be going wrong?

Does the script numbered_marker.php (in the googlemaps folder) have sufficient permissions to run?

And I'm curious - is there something you've done to make it so that that portion of the page seems "washed out" - the image for the missing pin is dull, and the text to the right isn't as dark as the text above it - compare the word Birth to the words Group Sheet above it in the previous section.

I looked at the Server Error Log and there are no errors showing for the 15th. Don't know what's up there, but it might be that the main error log only displays errors for a certain length of time since there are no entries dated other than today. There are no php errors listed in the log either.

numbered_marker.php (as well as everything else in googlemaps folder) has 777 permissions. The googlemaps folder itself has 755 permissions. Is there a problem here?

And I think I fixed the washed out look. I don't know why, but I had css opacity set at 75% for "databack". I removed that and it looks better now.

I'm still not seeing the pins however, only the shadows. I've checked multiple browsers (Firefox, Safari, and Opera) thinking that it might be browser specific, but none of them show the pins. I've also noticed that directly below "Event" to the right of the map, it says "Link to Google Maps". Is this supposed to be an icon that looks like a white pin instead of text?

Well whatever has happened, I can't get logged in past the .htaccess screen currently.

Can you disable this until it's figured out what the problem is, as having to go through hoops to try and see the pages means it's harder to take a "quick look".

Thanks

Sorry... I had a problem yesterday with tng suddenly not being able to communicate with my database, so I shut down the htaccess in case of hacker. I later discovered it wasn't a hacker, but I forgot to open it again. It's open again now. Sorry again.

This is the link for the pin that should be displaying to the right of the map...

http://members.ofclanjenkins.com/Genealogy...e=pin006no2.png

there is no obvious problem with that, except that the pin doesn't show. Compare that to this one from my site

http://roger.lisaandroger.com/googlemaps/n...e=pin023no1.png

which does draw the pin and puts the number on it.

And from your site

http://members.ofclanjenkins.com/Genealogy...glemaps/006.png

works to give the bare naked pin without the number on it.

So

check in your TNG Admin ------> Setup ------> Diagnostics - is there a green light beside GD Library - that is needed to draw the number onto the pin and create the new image.

If that's green I am stumped as to why this wouldn't work.

Yep... GD Library, as well as everything else, is green. For awhile I thought maybe it might have something to do with the path to the graphics, but I don't think so, because the graphic for the shadow is in the same place, and that is displaying fine. I'd sure like to get this figured out, cause I'm in the process of assigning geocodes to all my places, but it seems redundant if the pins won't show.

I just clicked on the link "http://members.ofclanjenkins.com/Genealogy...e=pin006no2.png" and got the same server error you were getting before. I then checked the error log and it has entries. I've copied the error into a text file and attached it. Maybe you'll see something there.

The error is I guess in one or other of these lines...

[Sat Sep 19 11:13:10 2009] [error] [client 209.237.92.165] SoftException in Application.cpp:256: File "/home/ofclanje/public_html/members/Genealogy/googlemaps/numbered_marker.php" is writeable by group, referer: http://www.tngforum.us/index.php?showtopic=4992&st=0&gopid=23993&
[Sat Sep 19 11:13:10 2009] [error] [client 209.237.92.165] Premature end of script headers: numbered_marker.php, referer: http://www.tngforum.us/index.php?showtopic=4992&st=0&gopid=23993&

So first try uploading a fresh copy of numbered_marker.php and leave the permissions as 644 and see if that lets it run.

I'm not sure why it's an error to have the script writeable, but that seems to be what the first line is about.

The second line I'm not sure, but a fresh copy might fix that too.

That did it. I don't know if it was the fresh copy, or a problem with the permissions, but now it displays the numbered pins properly. Thank you so much Roger. I don't think I'd have ever figured this out on my own.

I've been having the same problem as you have suggested and this is the first place that i've found that offers a fix for the problem, so I will give Land insurance a go as soon as i get a moment :)

Much appreciated for the advice!!

Send an email to rogerkiwi@aol.com with the login details to your site for TNG and for FTP access and I can take a look at it.
