How to List in Google

How do I get my TNG Names listed into Google or is it done automatically ???

Apologies for this being long winded...

I am getting about 1 visitor a week to my site whom I suspect is a distant cousin working long hand with the names into his tree. I have spent an hour or more going through various messages on the forum but could not see anything pertaining to my problem or if they are they are as a result of what I'm after in the first place. So apologies from this thicko if the answers are somewhere else in the forums....

My Web Site has been up an running for some months now.

I had it hosted with NTL and all the pages where listed or able to be found doing a search via Google and would come up somewhere on the first results page..

I turned to TNG due to its ability to upload and amend a tree very Swiftly indeed.

I am hosted with Simply Hosting but my Problem is I do not seem or the pages and names for people in my tree do not seem to be found when a search is done in google or any other search engines and a few family friends are wondering why they cannot find any family members when they do do a search or pass to relatives whom later do a search and find zilch.

So what have I done or not done and I am not one for coding etc – things need to be simple

When I do a search in Google on my Son Shaun Edward Taylor I can find him listed elsewhere but not via my TNG stuff. It may be due to his age and thus

Putting his name in quotes in google gets 3 hits and one of them is not my site, but my info

I am Hosted with Simply Hosting and when I log into my C Panel to see the number of visitors I see this entry after entry after entry – screen after screen similar to this one.

I'm sure all the questions you'll have will be answered somewhere there, but in a nutshell here's what you need to do..

Here's a link to the download

Once that's downloaded, put the file into the Admin directory on your site, and then run it by going to

http://YourSite/admin/createsitemap_6.3.php

Once that's done, you need to get (if you don't already have) a Google account, and then go to the WebMaster tools

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/dashboard

and set that up to have Google know where your sitemap files are stored.

This then tells Google everything that's on your site in a format they can understand, and it will/might/should get more of your site indexed.

1. After you do what the theKiwi suggested, you must be patient. Very patient. Unless Google has changed its way of doing business, getting a website fully indexed by Google takes a long, long time.

2. If you have not already made/submitted a GENDEX file (this file does NOT go to Google), go to Administration/Import/Export/Secondary Processes/Create GENDEX. Of course, first click on "Help for this area."

I made it all the way to Google...and the posting of the URL...

Mine is in XML format....

It doesnt like .xml.... I know I am missing something!

UPDATE: I found it....Its obvious to me now..

FIRST you enter your domain

Then in step two on Google it asks for your sitemap index xml file.

Paste it in and its all set!

Yeah, and they keep changing what counts to keep in indexed. I had 15,000 indexed and now it is down to around 2,000

The sitemap creation respects the privacy settings you have in place, so for example suppresses living people from the report.

Just a follow up....after months of having about 4500 links indexed...I occasionally resubmit if I add new names...perhaps that was my mistake. Now the links are down to 1500. *Groan*

What is the preferred way to have google consistently update and increase...(I realize that , in itself, might be a dream)....seems like Google does what it wants....inconsistent and baffling as the case may be.

Just trying to figure out whats best.....

When you re-submit it (google) seems to decrease your numbers, however in due time it increases again so dont worry to much.

Yeh its seems strange? that its possibly not good to re-submit often. I've recently re-submitted and dropped a few hundred pages so now just sit tight for a few months and let google do its thing.

The problem is that I guess you're using TNG 8, and there's a whole different file/folder structure in place now.

You need to open the file createsitemap_6.3.php and change the first 9 lines down to if ($link) to

In looking at your site, it appears that the sitemap file is in the admin folder (which became obsolete with TNG version 8, but not in your root directory. Double check that the file is in your root directory, then try running it from there.

I just deleted the file from admin but it is still in the home directory, i.e. the directory with html_public and www. I finally got my sitemap created. Thanks

about 6 months ago i had about 1200 pages listed on google - then i re-submitted and it decreased quite a bit. So i have left it since and i had a look now and it has 1900 (i think i have about 2300 pages or or something like that within my site) pages listed which i'm very happy with.

So i'll only submit a new index only everynow and then - once a year perhaps? My site doesnt really grow much in terms of people but more-so today for the images.
