LindyD
I am new to TNG and am making good progress I think, albeit with a fair bit of much appreciated help from Darrin. Am currently sitting up until all hours to link all the media files, of which I have several thousand! I have a gmail address that I have used for years for family history and it is the one linked to TNG. I have clicked on 'Contact Us' and sent a 'testing testing' email. I get a 'thank you your message has been sent' flash up on my screen... but no email arrives in my gmail inbox. Thus far, I haven't set up a mailbox on my hosting account as I wasn't sure I needed to. I don't want them to provide me with an email address linked to my domain. But could this be the reason I am not receiving emails sent by users via the Contact Us facility? Is there anywhere else I need to configure email on TNG? I've tried trawling through all the sittings but can't see anything obvious. https://www.dbhtwigs.uk/
ajnsmits
To test your email, I sent a message through the “Contact Us” form. All the email variables are listed in config.php. $emailaddr = "xxxxxxxx@gmail.com"; $tngconfig['fromadmin'] = "0"; $tngconfig['disallowreg'] = "0"; $tngconfig['revmail'] = "0"; $tngconfig['autoapp'] = "1"; $tngconfig['autotree'] = "0"; $tngconfig['ackemail'] = "0"; $tngconfig['omitpwd'] = "0"; $tngconfig['usesmtp'] = "1"; $tngconfig['sendingemail'] = "xxxxxx@xxxxx.nl"; $tngconfig['mailhost'] = "smtp.xxxxxxxx.nl"; $tngconfig['mailuser'] = "xxxxx@xxxxx.nl"; $tngconfig['mailpass'] = "xxxxxxxx"; $tngconfig['mailport'] = "25"; $tngconfig['mailenc'] = "tls"; and look at this page https://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php/Setup_-_Mail_and_Registration
LindyD
Where do I look for the Contact Us config please? I am looking in Setup >> Configuration >> General Settings >> Mail and Registration - but that doesn't seem to be the right place?
ajnsmits
LindyD Can you access your files on the server using FTP? If so, look for the config.php file in the root directory. Or is that not what you mean? The config.php file is actually the same as Setup >> Configuration >> General Settings >> Mail and Registration, but if you set “Use SMTP authentication” to “Yes,” additional fields will appear
LindyD
No, I haven't been using a FTP. Perhaps that's the problem? After exporting my gedcom I have accessed files direct from my laptop. I have set SMTP authentication to Yes and added the SMTP host name, username and password. Encryption I assume is SSL but not sure about the Port number. Google is telling me 587. However, all of that gives me a message saying We're sorry, but your message could not be delivered. Please contact Dutton, Berrett & Hungerford Twigs directly at ****@gmail.com. ajnsmits
My port number is 25 en encrypted is tls
LindyD
It doesn't like either of those settings either! Am so sorry, am probably being very dense. I'm fairly OK with configuring data but all this truly under the bonnet stuff is a bit beyond me... 😕
Steve1200
Check this post for using gmail if you have 2FA enabled: Per Google if 2FA is off: Since two-factor authentication (2FA) is turned off, standard Gmail passwords are completely blocked by Google when used in third-party scripts. Because Google has deprecated "Less Secure Apps" access. In you Google account you turn 2FA on and generate a 16 digit app password for TNG. Alternately if your host offers email, and you have an email address setup, turn SMTP off. This will cause TNG to use phpMailer to send emails though you host's server. Ensure your E-mail Address in TNG is the same as that you use on the host. In any case you must set Send all mail from address above to YES. LindyD
Thank you every one. I seem to have tried all of the suggested settings, but without joy. I do have 2FA on my gmail account. I have changed my password to a longer one. I don't have an app password as I got to the point where it says 'this is not recommended'... I sent my cousin login and password details from the registration page and that arrived OK, albeit in his spam bin. I sent Darrin the same for admin purposes in the same way - but that did not apparently reach him... I wondered if settings had to be edited on the web hosting account but you all seem to be confirming that I am editing the right place. Apart from sending passwords for new users I don't plan to send any emails via the website, I just need to receive any suggestions and feedback via the contact us box! Am currently still flummoxed! Steve1200
Google considers app passwords "not recommended" because they grant third-party apps and devices full, bypass access to your account without requiring Two-Step Verification (2FA). Once generated, an app password stays valid until you revoke it, creating a long-term security vulnerability if the third-party app or its server gets breached. So you are not able to use the host email service?
LindyD
I've creating an app password and have logged in with it - but TNG still won't send messages via the content box. I am not keen on using the host email service if that is only going to be valid as long as I use them. I want all emails and messages in my Gmail inbox where I can keep track of them. My genealogy email address has been in use for 25 years and is well known to family and collaborators. I find that people who use email accounts related to their internet provider, website of workplace tend to move accounts often and you lose contact with them fast. I've spent all afternoon searching the wiki and the forum, following one suggestion and then another, and whilst some people have clearly struggled as I am, for others it all seems to have been very simple. I've followed all the suggested simple instructions but am clearly missing a trick somewhere. 😩
ajnsmits
My regular email account is ajsmit@gmail.com. I created the email address I use for TNG through my hosting provider. See the blue image. Then I entered the rest of the information in TNG. I hope this helps.
Philip Roy
I would talk to your hosting provider. You need to make sure that you have set up an account on the server properly from which to send to your Gmail account. In other discussions it became something as simple as turning off SMTP authentication. For others, turning it on was the solution. Steve1200
Phillip makes goods points. My suggestions were guesses at best since I have no idea how your hosting account email is or is not setup. I myself use SMTP on port 465 but I realize my settings will not work for everyone.
Katryne
Hello ! I use an email address with the same domain as the site. The only settings I specified are : Citation Send all mail from address above: Yes Use SMTP authentication: No Nothing else and it worked immediately. GOGGS
After struggling with this myself way back when, I realized that my linux OS did not have PHPmailer installed, and that's what TNG is using. As soon as I installed it, everything worked perfectly... GOGGS
LindyD
Thank you again for all you help with this. I still haven't resolved the issue but ran out of time today. Will contact my host tomorrow. Inputting data on TNG is a doddle but am finding all this under the bonnet stuff less than intuitive and and am struggling to find what I need in the wiki. I fear I am likely to be a regular participant on this forum for a while yet...!

I think you are also where a lot of folk have been and some are like you just starting to put their head under the bonnet.. DO not be afraid to ask.. Fear only that you don't! <smile>. DO let us know how you get on with your hosting folks! Welcome and best..
LindyD
Just some feedback as this issue has now been resolved with help from someone on the TNG Facebook Forum. When using a gmail email address for Contact Us you have to do the following: 1. Set up 2FA 2. Create a Google app password (a different one than the app password used for maps) 3. SMTP host name = smtp.gmail.com 4. Port 587 5. Encryption: tls Hope this may be helpful for others! Worked like a charm for me and another poor soul who had been struggling with the same issue for over two years!
Philip Roy
Sorry, are you saying that’s the info that you put into TNG, because if so, I’m amazed that worked. There's two things to look at when setting up contact us page…. 1) The email address the details get sent to…that can be almost any email address 2) ***HOW*** TNG sends the email to that address…and that’s the tricky part. Most people set up an account on their actual server (or web host) to send the email out. You seem to be suggesting you’ve managed to get TNG to send via your Gmail account, which staggers me…because Gmail is very locked down and doesn’t want to be used to send random emails from websites. The fact that 2FA factors into your how to is even more curious, as 2FA has nothing to do with sending an email I confess I’m confused by your solution
LindyD
Confused or not it works. I'd been struggling with it for a couple of weeks, others for a whole lot longer. 2FA, a dedicated app password and the correct port and encryption were the magic key for me. And yes, that is the config within TNG. Edited July 10 by LindyD MIssing info.
Philip Roy
Right, but you’re making it sound like 2FA information is needed in TNG. I’d love to know where that information goes in TNG. I’m pretty sure you’re just saying you needed to make your Gmail account more secure and that’s where you use 2FA…and I assume that is what you also mean by “a dedicated password app”…to handle 2FA in Gmail? LindyD
Sorry, I am obviously not being very clear. What I am saying that in order to configure TNG for a gmail address your Google account has to have 2FA and you have to have a Google app password to enter in the TNG config. Those are Google rules, not TNGs, but a Gmail address apparently won't work for Contact Us without them. Obviously not everyone uses Gmail, but for those who have tried and failed, I thought the information might by helpful.

Steve1200
Glad to hear you have it working! My post on June 28 mentioned Google rules requiring setting up 2FA and creating an app password but I did not mention the port or security setting. I have two Gmail accounts but I do not use them for TNG. The reason is Google's Workspace agreement states: "Google may transfer, store and process Customer Data in the United States or any other country in which Google or its agents maintain facilities. By using the Services, Customer consents to this transfer, processing and storage of Customer Data." So when notifying to a new user registration activation, I would not include sending their password. Additionally, I do not use my Gmail accounts for any financial or other correspondence that may contain sensitive information.
