DayLight and NightLight Templates v15.0.0.3 Now Available

The 4th release of the templates DayLight, and NightLight are now available for TNG 15.0 and later.  Although cosmetically v15.0.0.3 doesn't change much--the look-and-feel is largely the same--there are some big changes under the covers, and some cool new features for your site.  I've spent a lot of time improving the mobile layout and finally (after a lot of trial and error) solved the issue of presenting the navigation bar on TNG detail pages.

Here are the new and updated features:

  1. All of the table-based formatting has been removed in favor of flex and grid boxes (a much more modern coding standard).  What this means is the templates respond much better to changes in the browser's width, scaling and repositioning seamlessly and automatically.
  2. The right-side navigation bar can now be revealed on a TNG detail page (such as getperson.php or browsesources.php).  Look for the hamburger icon that appears in the content section when you switch to a detail page.  This even works on mobile devices where it's important not to clutter the content sections with the navigation bar.
  3. Responsive design for mobile is greatly improved, and I've even managed to integrate my mobile upgrades with the TNG mobile mode.  This is important because TNG's mobile mode makes changes to the content sections of pages, reducing the size of diagrams and tables to accommodate mobile devices.
  4. I've added some new icons that are more indicative of what they do.
  5. There's now a "scroll-to-the-top" icon in the footer.

I'm now going to go back and make the similar updates to NearDark2 and NearDawn2.  Unfortunately, due to a number of changes in how TNG processes headers and footers, I cannot port these new templates to TNG 14.  So the v3 templates are only compatible with TNG 15.0 and later.

If you want to see these templates in action, either DayLight or NightLight (depending on my mood :-) ) is active on Lindell-Herndon Genealogy.  Below are some screenshots of how the new template looks at 'mobile' size and with the floating nav bar visible.

You can download the .zip packages here or from the TNG Wiki:

NightLight v15.0.0.3

Remember that these templates need the eGenea Support Mod for loading language strings and the Template Manager for loading the template configuration.

Bill,

I am using the Daylight template for my website ( https://marcirish.com ).  I would like to use the latest version of Daylight but as you can see I have made quite a few changes to the look and feel of the home page.  Would I be able to keep these changes if I install the latest update of Daylight?

thanks,

Marc

Hey Marc... In all honesty, this is pretty extensive rewrite of the early table-based design (not to mention that tablesaw for mobile doesn't play nice with modern grid-box and flex-box constructs for doing responsive design).  So integrating changes is a bit more complicated than just doing a few 'cut-and-paste' repairs.  That said, after doing 4 templates over this way, I've gotten pretty good at the 'side-by-side' comparisons needed to patch up a template.

In looking over marcirish.com, I notice that your navigation bar seems to be modified only my mod parameters.  That's good, no changes there.  The content part of your index page is very close to 'out-of-the-box' as is your footer section.  Just your header seems to depart from the standard template a bit more than other sections.  So, if you could send me your index.php, top-menu.php, navigation.php, and footer.php files, I could probably send you an updated version.  (Might take me an hour or so.)

My only constraint is that I'm not currently at home--we had a sewer catastrophe and had to decamp to an Airbnb where we've been for more than two weeks.  (Long story, our city is being stubborn about an old-growth tree that crushed our sewer ling and they won't let us take down the tree to effect a repair.)

So I might not get to this until well into next week.

Got 'em.  Thanks Marc.  I'll start on these on Monday.

I am attaching a folder that contains the four files.  See attached.

Hey Marc, I've sent the updates back to you in a Community message.  Let me know how they work.
