Best practice to display family scrapbooks

I have inherited several family scrapbooks. I am trying to figure out the best way to display them in TNG.

I would like to have a short history of the scrapbook - who owned it, when and where it was from, how it came to me.  Several of these scrapbooks include the scrapbook maker's friends from school and I don't really want to set them up as unconnected people on the tree.  I would like to make a History type page that has the story of the scrapbook and then lets the viewer go thru the pictures quickly.  I would like to add captions to the pictures if there is something to say about the picture, but not all the images are identified!  What is the best way to do this?

Is this what an Album is?  I can't see how I would link to the album from a history page.

Should I create a History page with some script to show lots of pictures?  I have figured out how to do this with a half dozen images, but I'm not sure of the complications of adding several dozen pictures.  You can see my version of this at:

The Yudelson Home on Briarcliff: Solski Family

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Peggy

I think your answer here is to use historytemplate.php.  I inherited a number of family albums including several from the early 1920s from my grandfather. He was an avid Gilbert and Sullivan fan and was the lead tenor for the Leicester Amateur Dramatic Society for a number of years. Below is our presentation of his 1922 photograph album of HMS Pinafore.

A photograph album of "HMS Pinafore" - 1922

I have for many years presented the results of our research in this manner and now have over 500 such illustrated articles. They are collected into a colour coded magazine. If you would like to see how this works, the home page is below.

I prefer to use my other site dedicated to photo albums for this purpose. With the External media mod, I can display external photos in TNG, while controlling the durability of this storage since it's the same hosting, same domain name, same owner (me). An example I'm working on at the moment : https://album.chauvigne.info/index?/category/le-petit-album-de-francis

@Katryne @ Newfloridian  Thank you so much for your replies and links.  I love that you use the different techniques.  They are both beautiful websites and something that I aspire to!

I have more questions.  I'm making this public because I hope more people will add to the discussion.

Are you able to update your site when a new TNG version comes out?

I know that Katryne uses WordPress from previous discussions.  Do you use a different software program for you photo galleries?  I use ZenPhoto on my other website, but I don't like the way that it shows stories about the pictures. I like the way you can add a long caption if I learn enough PHP to set it in a History.

I am interested in the way that Alan set up colors for different family branches.  I would like to do that.  Did you create a new variable and use it to set the colors in the mytngstyle file?

Thank you again for your thoughts about this.  You have created wonderful and informative websites.

Peggy, I do NOT use Wordpress but several other CMS web sites. Because I want the best for each function and neither my Tng nor my Piwigo photo album are universal enough in my opinion. I tried to make the different sites look alike, at least same colors and css tricks. There are several links and several borrowings from one site to another, but no common users system. I maintain also a forum, a press review and a classified pages site. For all the sites, I use the TNG contact form, because it'is the safest to avoid spam.

I am still struggling with this.  I made an Album.  I would like to add it to a Histories page.  Is there a simple way to do this?

I tried copying the absolute URL from where I can view the album and it didn't work.

Thanks in advance.

Peggy, how and where did you make the album ? Within TNG or outside ?

I tried something , embedding the photos of my Piwigo album into an Histories page of my Test TNG. Not very pretty, not very neat because it was done too quickly, but all the photos in my album are there.

Hi Katryne, I looked at your Piwegi albums before but have lost my access to your website.  I probably wrote the password down incorrectly when I registered before.

I have two goals -
1)  get this www.solski.org site up and running while learning as much as I can about how to use TNG and PHP
2) set up a website for the rest of my family (another 7 family lines!)

I have used other media hosting sites before (zenphoto.org and tropy.org with omeka.org are the most recent).  You are right - they are much easier to get the photos in and to display! But I am hoping to get more consistency to my site, and I am learning PHP as I go.  So all this experimenting is how I am learning PHP to use on the site for the rest of the family.

I made a small album in TNG. I would like to include it at the end of one of my Histories and put the History on the index page.  I think I don't understand all the details of relative URLs in PHP in general and in TNG in particular. And I keep moving the places where I want to put Histories, so that breaks the links.

If I write a biography of one person and want to include a photo album built in TNG for that one history, how do I do that?
If I want to sort my histories into folders by some category (paternal and maternal and places), does that change how I link to the biography?
Are TNG Albums for different sets of images all in Media?  Or are they in their own folders?
Or if they are built on the fly by PHP, how can I refer to the correct file to build the album? My first Album is album #1 - is that enough information for a TNG Histories page to find it?

Thanks for your help.

Peggy

Hello Peggy,

I tried something else to embed the small album in an history page  I displayed the album in TNG, this one https://geneakat.chauvigne.info/showalbum.php?albumID=3&tnggallery=1

Then, had a look at its source, copied the part with the photos and copied them as html in the body text of a new media. I mean this kind of code:

<div class="titlebox"> <table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" border="0" class="tfixed whiteback"> <div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1221&amp;albumlinkID=19"><img src="photos/min_20230813110148-e159a9de-me.jpg" height="100" alt="Petit album de Francis" title="Petit album de Francis" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1153&amp;albumlinkID=13"><img src="photos/min_20230715120803-d13c1762-la.jpg" height="100" alt="Eulalie Bourlaud" title="Eulalie Bourlaud" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=66&amp;albumlinkID=18"><img src="photos/min_Rosine-Bartinet.jpg" height="100" alt="Rosine Bartinet" title="Rosine Bartinet" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1157&amp;albumlinkID=8"><img src="photos/min_20230716222042-78a096ad-la.jpg" height="100" alt="Monsieur Deriveaux père" title="Monsieur Deriveaux père" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1158&amp;albumlinkID=7"><img src="photos/min_20230716222041-697b09b4-la.jpg" height="100" alt="Madame Deriveaux mère" title="Madame Deriveaux mère" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1151&amp;albumlinkID=12"><img src="photos/min_20230715105724-a4a64354-la.jpg" height="100" alt="Jean Marot" title="Jean Marot" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1152&amp;albumlinkID=14"><img src="photos/min_20230715105723-c50cd1ca-la.jpg" height="100" alt="Eulalie Bourlaud" title="Eulalie Bourlaud" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=355&amp;albumlinkID=11" target="_blank"><img src="photos/min_Bouchet-Celine.jpg" height="100" alt="Céline Bouchet" title="Céline Bouchet" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=54&amp;albumlinkID=15"><img src="photos/min_eulalie-bourlaud.jpg" height="100" alt="Eulalie Bourlaud" title="Eulalie Bourlaud" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1147&amp;albumlinkID=10"><img src="photos/min_Bouchet_Celine.jpg" height="100" alt="Céline Bouchet" title="Céline Bouchet" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1148&amp;albumlinkID=9"><img src="photos/min_Notre_petite_cousine_Honorine_Palut.jpg" height="100" alt="Notre petite cousine Honorine Palut, selon l'annotation au dos de la photo" title="Notre petite cousine Honorine Palut, selon l'annotation au dos de la photo" class="thumb" /></a> </div><div class="databack gallery" align="center"><a href="showmedia.php?mediaID=1150&amp;albumlinkID=16"><img src="photos/min_mere_beau-pere_de_tante_Fairon_de_Berruges.jpg" height="100" alt="La mère et le beau-Père de Tante Fairon de Berruges" title="La mère et le beau-Père de Tante Fairon de Berruges" class="thumb" /></a> </div></table> </div>

Result is here :

https://geneakat.chauvigne.info/showmedia.php?mediaID=2086&medialinkID=2499

If you need only one photo, you pick the code of it. If you want the photo in its original size, you choose it from the lot and take of the min_ part of its name. This way, you can copy the exact integration code with the relative url.

Thank you!  This is getting closer!  I still think I have a problem with my subfolders that I need to work out.

I have to put this aside for a bit as I have out of town guests coming, but I will keep working and post here if I either solve this or get stuck again.
