Unused media

Today, I have uploaded Unused_media_v15.0.2.2 to the TNG Wiki.

The changes are to update the style to match TNG v15 (new icons, larger form fields), and the ability to select an item for addition to TNG.

I have tested it on my site, but feedback from other users would be useful.

Thanks for any comments.

Regards,

Warren

Warren, really looking forward to trying it out, but the Instructional Designer in me read through the wiki page and I’m confused. It lists unused media and then there is a tick, with that tick meaning “Add new media”…but this is an image already on the site/server, just not used…so why would I add it again? Do you get what I mean? I’m talking about my reaction to the concept of adding new media.

I think what you are getting at is “Add to TNG”? The tick icon confuses also, as a tick represents approving something to me. Then again, maybe you are approving something?

I’d suggest maybe one of these options…

  • change to an edit icon and that icon be renamed “Edit media details” or something like that
  • a “+” icon and it’s referred to as “Add to TNG”…and when you do, it takes you to the media page to associate it to a person?
  • a link icon and it’s changed to “Link to TNG” or something like that?

Sorry, this is just me being me and the work that I do. I could spend days on things like this 🤣

Hi Phil,

Thank you for your comments - appreciated.

Yes, what I am getting at is 'Add to TNG'. I will change the text next to the icon to 'Add Media to TNG'.

I have noticed users who are confused between 'unlinked media' (in the TNG database, but not linked to any person, family, place etc.) and 'unused media' (on the server, but not registered with TNG).

I initially looked outside of TNG for a suitable icon, but found nothing that I was happy with.

So, I tried then to use an existing TNG icon, and settled on the 'tick'. I did think about using the edit icon, but dismissed it, because you are not really editing the image, you are selecting it to add to TNG.

Using Admin > Media > Add New Media, when you select an image from your site, you are given a pop-up with a list of files, and a tick to select the one you want to add. Not exactly the same, I know, but similar.

Maybe a '+' icon would be better, but I couldn't find one of a suitable size 'already present in the TNG package'.

In earlier versions, I did have an external icon which needed to be part of the mod. The way to manage that seems to be to have a separate folder for the mod to contain the icon file. It has caused problems to me, and others - missing or misplaced. I have now borrowed the undo icon for that.

I will wait and see if I get any other feedback before I make any changes.

Regards,

Warren

The only '+' icon I could find was in the mods section (the Add file option).

But I also note that a couple of templates use Font Awesome, such as Template 21, so you have a lot more access to icons that way, I think....is that how Font Awesome works?

Such as...https://fontawesome.com/icons/square-plus?f=classic&s=solid

Oh, and I just installed the new version of the mod locally and on my site and it's working great. It's one of those mods that work best when it has nothing to report 😉

TNG has a tng_plus.gif in the img folder

Disregard my tng_plus.gif icon suggestion, it is too small.

I had never used this mod, but there is certainly something I do not understand since without the mod, the Admin > Media search tab shows 275 media in my collections when the mod is not installed.  With the mod installed, the Unused Media tab shows 1,465 items.

Hi Ken,

Yes, I had already looked at tng_plus.gif and came to the same conclusion.

I have just uploaded a new version of the mod, replacing the green tick with a green plus.

I noted in an earlier post that there is confusion between Admin > Media and Admin > Unused Media.

For you (and anyone else who cares to read it) Admin > Media shows all the media that has been added to the TNG media table. There is also a box to tick (Unlinked only) which will list media which exists in the TNG media table, but has no link to a person, family, source, repository, citation or place.

Unused Media, on the other hand, lists all media which is in any mediatype folder or subfolder which DOES NOT EXIST in the TNG media table.

1,475 does seem rather a lot.

Part of the process of building Unused Media creates a file of all folders to search. With Unused Media installed, It should be in the 'extensions' folder with a file name 'unused_media_folder_list.php'.

It may be worth looking at that to see if there are any folders that should not be there.

Philip Roy had a similar problem a few days ago.

Warren

Thanks Warren,

I will need to figure out how to eliminate all the files for my Census Plus International mod since adding census folder and its 21 subfolders since adding

census,census/Augusta,census/Brunswick,census/Caribou,census/EagleLake,census/FortKent

still shows those folders in the list.

@Warren S GILBERT I can confirm that the new version (still listed as Unused_media_v15.0.2.2) works great locally and on my site. I get why you took an approach that eliminated the additional folder that had to be included with the CFG file...but now that you have added that back in (to include the green plus image), I think the wiki instructions need to be amended to include the uploading of that folder and the image in it.

I updated

$ignore_folders = "thumbs,default,proofs,sigs,unknown,img"

and

$ignore_extensions = "txt,php,tif"

which allowed me to find over 300 default images in treeID.personID.jpg format in the photos instead of the photos/default folder

So thanks for the mod which is allowing me to clean up unused media on my site.

Not sure why this is and maybe others see this too.

The "X" looks much smaller eventhough it has the same dimensions as the "+" sign.

Also looking small

image.png

Edit:

Further investigation show the rendered size is 8x12 px and the aspect ratio is 2:3.

How can I change it back to normal?

Good day to all.

I have a problem with the mod. Under v15 the "unused media" mod does not work. Error communicating with the database. Despite everything else working and I haven't changed anything, it throws the following message: Error: TNG is not communicating with your database. Please check your database settings and try again. Settings can be found under Admin/Setup/General Settings/Database, or at the top of your config.php file.

Can someone help me with this?

Mariusz,

Have you checked your database settings and config.php?

Does everything else work as it should?

@Philip Roy Yes, I decided not to give this small change a new name as there was no change in functionality. Was I wrong? Why?

I have updated the Wiki installation instructions.

@Rob Severijns I cannot explain the appearance of the icons on your site.

On my site, times.png is 382 bytes, dimensions 20 x 21, and undo.png is 618 bytes, dimensions 20 x 22.

What size are they on yours?

If the same, then it could be css affecting them.

Both of these use class="newsmallericon" whereas green-plus.png does not.
The css statements for "newsmallericon" in genstyle.css are:

.newsmallericon {
    border:0px;
    display:block;
    float:left;
    padding:4px 6px 4px 6px;
    border-radius:6px;
}

I notice from your User page on the Wiki that you are using templates 207 and 260. Is there anything in there that could affect it.

Perhaps temporarily change your template to a TNG one may reveal the cause.

Looks like the rendering of the image is template driven.

Changing template makes the icons show as they should.

Getting stranger by the minute ;-)

I rolled back to the previous  version of Unused Media V15.0.2.2 (the one Brett uploaded) and the icons show as they should.

image.png

What has changed between both versions to make the last version show the icons rendered to small?

Edit:

Could it be the admin_unusedmedia.php that is responsable?

@Rob Severijns

When I changed the green tick to a green plus, I noticed that the icon did not line up (vertically) with the red times sign. I investigated what Darrin was using on similar pages, and added the class="newsmallericon" to both the red times sign and the orange undo sign.

So clearly, that is what is causing your problem.

Many admin pages use "newsmallericon". For example Admin > People uses it on the edit icon, test icon and delete icon. What does your admin_people page look like?

Lines 765-770 of he admin_unusedmedia.php shows smallicon instead of newsmallericon:

	echo '<td><img src="' . $extspath . '/green-plus.png" title="' . $admtext['addmediatotng'] . '" alt="' . $admtext['addmediatotng'] .'"' . $dims . ' class="smallicon"/></td>';
	echo '<td><span class="normal">' . $admtext['addmediatotng'] . '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></td>';
	echo '<td><img src="img/times.png" title="' . $admtext['text_delete'] . '" alt="' . $admtext['text_delete'] . $dims . ' class="smallicon"/></td>';
	echo '<td><span class="normal">' . $admtext['text_delete'] . '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></td>';
	echo '<td><img src="img/undo.png" title = "' . $admtext['text_include'] .  '" alt="' . $admtext['text_include'] . $dims . ' class="smallicon"/></td>';
	echo '<td><span class="normal">' . $admtext['text_include'] .  '&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></td>';

Could that be the cause?

Apologies, @Rob Severijns

As you have found, it seems that the last version I posted to the Wiki is missing the "newsmallericon" class in some places.

I'm working on a correction now, and will let you know when it's available.

No problem Warren,

I'll be off for the rest of the day but will check back later :-)

Maybe rename that one into 15.0.2.3 ;-)
