Bill Herndon
This is the third release of the templates NearDark2, NearDawn2, DayLight, and NightLight for TNG 14 and later. There is a single new feature: The list/menu in the Navigation pane now has a title that can be set and internationalized in template parameters. In addition, spacing issues between footer sections have been fixed, and font legibility has been improved in the administration pages. (Click any of the images for full-size previews): If you want to see these templates in action, one of the four is live on Lindell-Herndon Genealogy. marcirish
Bill, Is there a way to use this third release of DayLight and NOT lose whatever changes I have made to the 2nd release? thanks. Marc
Bill Herndon
Marc... There are three things you have to worry about when upgrading a template: The code, the CSS files, and the template settings. The last is somewhat complicated. So I'll address it first. Template Settings: Generally it's a good practice to have a backup of your template settings anyway, but especially when updating. So use the Template Manager mod to export your template settings before you do the update. I also recommend changing the name of your settings file (you do this in the mod parameters for Template Manager before you "save" your template settings). That way the settings file won't be overwritten by your update and you can reload your template settings if you need to. Also, and this is important, there is an additional template setting added to support the list/menu in the navigation pane. You'll see in the update package a file called: _diffconfig-14.0.0.2.php This template settings file contains just the changes used by v14.0.0.2 of DayLight. Once you've done the update, use the Template Manager to load this file (same procedure as you use for loading your own template settings: Change the filename in Template Manager parameters, and then use the "load" function for your template name). Loading this file won't overwrite your settings. It will just add the new stuff. CSS Files: There's a lot of new stuff here to support the administration interfaces--especially for templates DayLight and NightLight. You only have to worry about this if you've changed the file templatestyle.css. In that case, I recommend moving your changes to file mystyle.css. That will keep the primary template CSS file "clean". But do save your copy of mystyle.css prior to the update. (Perhaps rename it and then restore it afterwards.) The Code: There are a few code changes--most notably in the file navigation.php--and, unfortunately, there is no automated way to handle these changes if you've modified the code files. You'll have to compare the new file to your file to determine how to integrate them. If you haven't made any changes to navigation.php, you shouldn't have a problem. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. - Bill Herndon Lindell-Herndon Genealogy
Jodi W
Bill - I'm just now loading things up to try them out and came across an issue with my server. I wasn't able to see the NearDawn2 folder on my server with FileZilla even though I could see it on my cPanel. I saw that other templates had the permission 775 while the ND folder was, I think, 755. I changed the permission to 775 on ND2 and can now access it on FileZilla. I just thought I'd let you know my experience in case it makes any difference to you.
