They've updated their pricing model and it seems even more generous now... A known problem with the way TNG is using Google maps is the restriction of the API key. I tried restricting my key to only my URL, etc. and it caused map loading problems. So if you have any restrictions on any of the API's, you might want to try removing them. You will get warnings from Google, but I've never had an issue... GOGGS Thanks GOGGS. The Map API key I have been using since 2016 had no restrictions. I next tried to create a new project with Google and assigned a new map API key. That behaved much better with the map loading successfully more frequently, but still not more than half the time. What I then discovered is that if I move to another page after the failed heatmap load, then <back page> in my browser (Edge and Chrome) to the heatmap page again, it frequently loads. Not sure if that is just a quirk here, or if anyone can replicate that behaviour. The static placename Google map on the individual personal pages never fails with either the old key nor the new one. The problem applies only to the heatmaps. If the heatmap.php is pulled in for all templates, then why is this bug mostly reported for Template 15 by other users? johnebart
The heatmaps on all sites do seem to open perfectly on first attempt, but then every subsequent request fails to load the map in Template 15. I'm not sure that other templates would behave any differently
Katryne
John, I cannot see any heatmap on your 2 public sites, only a white area. Tried with 4 different browsers. While they are correctly displayed on my 3 TNG, all with template 16.

Katryne
If it's any consolation, in 12 years of TNG, I never clicked on Heatmap, which I discovered thanks to you. And now that I've finally accessed it, well, I really don't see the point. So I'll continue not to use it.

I have followed the instructions exactly and have not received any error messages so far. BUT, I have just realised that the ‘heatmap’ is no longer displayed. When I click on ‘heatmap’, a white area simply remains, as if Google maps had not been connected or set up. I have no mods installed or active. Has anyone had similar observations or experiences and can help or give a hint to reactivate the heat map? Thank you very much. After upgrading I do have the same problem here

Philip Roy
I don’t use heat maps and didn’t know of the functionality. @janp comment caught my eye in this thread. It looks pretty much like heat maps are no longer functional or at least won’t be from May using google maps… https://developers.google.com/maps/deprecations
johnebart
I'm a geographer, cartographer and genealogist. Strictly speaking, what TNG calls "Heat Maps" are called "Marker Cluster" maps (like Leaflet or Mapbox GL). Heat maps are termed for a gradient of colours for values of a variable geographically, like crime rates, climatic and meteroeological measures, hot spots versus cold spots In spite of some opinions that the "Heat Map" feature in TNG is superfluous, they are important to me and my kind of family presentations. They are the only way of visualising geographical distribution and migration of family branches, whether between continents, countries and even within counties in UK. I used them a fair bit when doing family talks, illustrating books and talking about geography in a genealogical context. So if any developers can pick this topic up again at some point which would allow us to keep Google maps as our default mapping tool but ALSO allow in addition the use the OSM layer (eg with parmetrised toggle?) - or try deck.gl (as suggested above) - that would be brilliant. Though I like OSM too, it falls short of my needs for many poorly mapped areas of the world. And let's call them (Marker)Cluster Maps rather than Heat Maps Thanks! johnebart
Hi all. Darrin just let me know that the Heat Map issue is resolved in version 15.0.4. Here is a link to his demo: https://lythgoes.net/genealogy/heatmap.php?mybool=AND&nr=50&mylastname=s&lnqualify=contains How wonderful! Now is the time to try it! johnebart
My heatmaps are working now with 15.0.4. Darrin is looking at some erratic display of the click-overs on the location pins, which seem to vary depending on browser. Chrome is generally fine: https://www.johnbartholomew.com/bartgen-public/heatmap.php?mybool=AND&myfirstname=&mylastname=, but not always. Philip Roy
The question marks are a sign of a broken or missing image. I just sat at an old Mac using Firefox and curiously, every time I reloaded the page, different markers displayed or didn’t. So one time I got 1,2,? And another time I got ?,2,3…so I don’t quite get what that signifies. A cache issue? A connectivity issue (as the images are pulled from google each time)…something else? Philip - FYI - it was an issue with Simply Hosting bot blocking captcha script. It was blocking my browser from fetching external assets from Google. All fixed now.
