polysfamily
I am new to setting up my site but am making progress. I am using Template 4 and am making a number of design modification. My current issue is I has uploaded a new "bigphoto" for my home page and it works but the file size (resolution) I think is too big because it takes too long to load as the page is displayed. I am assuming I needd to change the resolution but what is the optimal resolution to use? Also I have uploaded photos into the phote section but no thumbnail was generated and the picture size when I display is enormous? My site is polysfamily.comThanks for any suggestionsDave

If so, 300x172 is the perfect size.Is this picture also available linked to a person? If so, I have been making those images either 600 or 800 pixels wide (and whatever height maintains the right image ratio). Is this image intended to be downloaded by a user, and printed at high-quality (like at a photo center at Walmart)? If so, leave the main image at this size, and make a copy for display on your front page.Does this help at all?Jerry Milo Johnson
Jerome Liebowitz
Dave,If the image is simply for viewing over the internet (and not for downloading to be printed at good quality, i.e. high resolution), then a reseolution of 72 ppi is all that is needed. However, the actual size of the photo (# pixels wide x # pixels high) also determines the size of the file in kb's. Most image software lets you resize the photo -- to 600 pixels x 400 pixels, for example, as well as change the resolution to 72 ppi. Then, when saving as a jpg, it often lets you choose the quality (compression). Many image editing programs (the various Adobes, for example) also let you simply resize and then "save for the web" (which automatically reduces the resolution to 72 ppi). Keep in mind that your viewers will have different size screens, so, if you don't want them to have to scroll across, your maximum width should probably be a little less than 800 pixels (for older monitors) and not over 1000 for newer monitors. That way, most viewers will see it easily. You can see some of my examples at My WebpageGood luck!Jerry LiebowitzI am new to setting up my site but am making progress. Ken Roy
Dave,You can use IrfanView, which is a free program, to batch convert your pictures. You can set a width and it will maintain aspect ratio and you can also set the dpi to 72 for example for web display. You can download it from IrfanView

theKiwi
Does anyone have a favorite batch processing method for the Mac (OS X)?Several come to mind - depending on just where your files are stored...If you have them in iPhoto, you could use that to do batch changing of things like pixel dimensions on images by choosing to export them and then choosing the size you want in the Export dialog.Or Graphic Converter has lots of Batch Editing options and possibilitiesAdobe Photoshop also allows for this with the ability to record a series of steps and then play it back, with or without user intervention along the way.Roger
waterhead
Does anyone have a favorite batch processing method for the Mac (OS X)?AnneAnne,Try Imagewell http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html It is a brilliant little app which can process your pictures and then ftp them directly to your site. It has sliders to set size and quality and you can immediately see the results. I have been amazed at how much I can reduce file sizes and get perfectly good photos for the web. There is a free version but for batching you need a paid version but at $14.95 it's still a gift.Chris
