Language selection sync with Joomfish for Joomla

I have Joomla installed with TNG and the login component all working fine.

I want the language selection of Joomla synchronised with that of TNG.

TNG seems to be using a cookie and for Joomla I am using Joomfish.

Both are working fine if independently.

I have a vague recollection of a suggestion of make the character sets coincide

but I could be getting mixed up with another Joomla extension so I search the forum

but found nothing to help. And anyway the character set for TNG is ISO-8859-1

for the languages I need and not language specific eg en_GB, es_ES etc.

Does anyone have any bright ideas? I'm certain it can't be too complicated but

as I am loosing sleep to my 4 month old I need a little prod in the right direction
