RESOLVED - Adding additional tree

Hey Everyone.

I'd like to add an additional tree to my existing tng install.  Right now I only have 1 tree, JonesHyman (tree1).  This is what I'd like to do:

Change the name of the existing tree (tree1) from JonesHyman to JonesZikorus.
Add a new tree (tree2) named HymanWoodson.
Move my spouse and her families from tree1 to tree2.

I read some articles on the wiki, but I'm still a little confused as to how to go about this properly.  I'd appreciate any advise.

You can change a Tree's Name, but not it's ID - the ID is the part that goes into the URL of many TNG pages. So if your current tree is ID tree1, you can't change that without some futzing around - eg to export a GEDCOM file of your current tree1, create a new tree named and IDed as you want and then import the GEDCOM into the new tree, but that might mess up things like cemeteries and media.

Thanks Roger.  I understand about the tree id's and tree names.

If I create a new tree with ID = Hyman and named Hyman or HymanWoodson or whatever,  that's not a problem.  How should I proceed to move my spouse and her family to the newly create treeID=Hyman?  Would I have to do it manually? That could take years and cost millions of lives! lol!

Now, I can create a gedcom from RootsMagic8 that has just her and her family.  Would that be the way to go?  But then I would still need to move/remove them from the original tree ID, tree1.

Seems like there should be an automated way to do this....

After doing a little more research on the wiki, and reading this:

Quote

Your purpose and aim at putting a tree online will determine whether you want to separate it into multiple sections or Gedcoms. As a tree expands it has a growing number of unrelated people. If you are sharing your tree without expecting any substantial contributions then one tree should be sufficient; however, if you are seeking help and input from your many relations you may find some benefit in separating it among the common lines of your cousins.

I've decided to keep the one tree as I have it now. I don't expect any family members to 'substantially contribute' to the tree.  I get most info from my own research and a small portion from relatives which I add to the database myself.....

Roger, thanks for you input.

TNG 14 included the ability to copy people from one tree to another - previously you could move them, alhough I'm not sure how.

But you're already hit on one of the issues with trying to make separate trees for husband/wife - people can end up needing to be in both trees - now if you have children, and in the future if you discover that somewhere along the lines for you and spouse there are common ancestors.
