ebelew
I have notices 100's of media added to my TNG site that is not showing up. Turns out the media is just a "link" to either a txt, doc, htm not to an actual media files on the site. We recently did a GEDCOM import. Is it possible that importing the GEDCOM added the links to TNG media because those media links were in the GEDCOM when it was created? I seem to remember that some software, when creating the GEDCOM has a check box option for include links to media. Or something like that. edglimited
Eddy, what Genealogy site did you export your Gedcom from, before you imported it into TNG..??
ebelew
I think it originally came from WikiTree into RootsMagic and then imported into TNG. edglimited
Wikitree I can explain. Roots Magic, I have no idea on how it works. When you export a Gedcom from Wikitree, or Ancestry.com and MyHeritage.com, you don't export the actual hard Media. Photos, Pdf's etc. If it is in Note form (.txt) then yes, it will be added to the Gedcom. The problem with Wikitree is when you export a Gedcom, you get all the Wiki Markup & Syntax in your Gedcom as well. All of that is now shown in your Notes section for each profile in TNG. You might see something like the attachment, but in this form ==Biography== ==Sources== ==Pictures== Media is stored on Wikitree and a link is included within your Gedcom, so when you click on it, you are shown the image, pdf stored at Wikitree. There is only two options available to clear up the mess. One is an edit of each profile and a cleanup of the Notes section, or a mass deletion of all Notes across all your profiles. Ancestry.com works with a software program called Family Tree Maker, whereby you can export Hard Media, as well as your Gedcom. But you need FTM. MyHeritage.com also does the same with Family Tree Builder. Again, you need FTB. Uploading a Gedcom from either into TNG, wont import Hard Media, just txt. A Gedcom is a txt based file only. ebelew
Thanks. So evidently TNG sees all this and imports it as media?
edglimited
This might be easier to follow. When you export a Gedcom from Wikitree, it reads all your files and media and imports it into the Gedcom as readable txt. No media is imported. If Wikitree finds a photo, it simply reads the location of where it is on Wikitree. Eg; https://www.wikitree.com/Belewtree/JohnBelew/pic12345.jpg. When you upload your Gedcom into TNG, TNG will read the Gedcom and look for profile data and any links. In this case it will see the following link, https://www.wikitree.com/Belewtree/JohnBelew/pic12345.jpg and display it as a link / reference in Notes back to the original source, in your case Wikitree and / or Roots Magic, where you have that Hard Media uploaded, such as Photo's, Pdf's. The same goes for Sources, if you have shared sources or access to documents on other sites, then those will be displayed as links as well. Birth Certs, Death Certs, Marriage etc. If you have 500 Photo's uploaded to Wikitree, you will now have 500 txt links in TNG.
