Running Local

Recommended Posts

Rob Roy

I am looking for fairly simple instructions to move TNG on a hosted site to a local drive.  I know I will need to buy some software to achieve this, and I really don't care which.  Just need easy to follow instructions.

No need to buy some program Rob.

Use WAMP or MAMP or another local server.

I recommand Laragon as local server.

Ditto Michel's recommendation.  Laragon is easiest I found to install and fastest to load.  All free.

OK. You choose.

To run TNG as local site, you have just to :

- Create a database with the same parameters as your online database.

- backup your online tables and structure

- FTP your entire online site to your local server (including media,  tables backups, etc...)

- restore your tables and structure backups on your local TNG.

If there is a problem of communication with the database, verify if your databasehost must be 'localhost' or '127.0.0.1' or somethings different of your online parameters

Between these steps, the subroot.php path "$tngconfig['subroot'] = "your local path to config.php; must be verified to be correct, before TNG will load, I would think.

There used to be 2 files that should never be transferred between environments

  • config.php since the definitions will be different
  • subroot.php if you moved your configuration files.

You may also not want to transfer any configuration files since they may also be different between different environments.
