LDJ Posted February 16, 2022 Report Share Posted February 16, 2022 New user. I'm trying to create histories to go along with my genealogy site. I'm using Template 13, running under TNG 13.1.1 on SimplyHosting. I've looked at the the guide for Creating Histories and don't see anything that explains my experience. I began by opening a new Histories document within Media. I've pasted content copied to clipboard (Mac OS 12.0.1) from Blogger into the Histories text window. Everything seemed to come across flawlessly. I saved and exited, viewed the content from Public Home. All OK. I've gone back and done some extensive editing to the file from Admin Home / Media. I don't see any problems while editing but when I save and edit and view the document everything – text and images – past a certain point has disappeared. I've experimented with different approaches, trying "save and exit" and "save and stay" and both pasting text, typing from the keyboard, and also pasting images from the clipboard and the end result is the same. It's like there is an invisible limit past which nothing will be saved. I've tried pasting a longer text with images into a new Histories file and that seems fine. However, as soon as I try to paste other images into the body of the content, the problem recurs. But it isn't just a case of the added image disappearing; all the following text has disappeared as well. I've looked at the HTML code and don't see anything that might explain why things are disappearing (see the end of the document below). The SS Pennsylvania did arrive in New York in June 1904, but a name-by-name search of the passenger list has not yet located anyone who might be my great-grandfather.</font></p><font data-keep-original-tag="false" data-original-attrs="{" style":""}"="" face="georgia" style="font-size: medium;"><div><font data-keep-original-tag="false"><font data-keep-original-tag="false" data-original-attrs="{" style":""}"="" face="georgia" style="font-size: medium;"><br></font></font></div></font></font> Any suggestions about how to fix or avoid this problem would be appreciated. If it's a matter of TNG not allowing me to use Mac OS's paste function to add images to documents, I'd appreciate pointers to how to get around this. Yes, I do refresh the browser. But I should point out that the content is there and then it disappears after in the editing window after I save it. And the missing content is missing from the HTML view as well. Since my original post, I've begun building a new, second copy of the histories document. I have not pasted in any images so far and the problem hasn't not yet repeated itself. I think this might be the clue. The process that I think may be linked to the problem: View original (jpeg or png) file using Apple Preview; highlight portion of image and copy; go to TNG media edit screen and paste ^p copied content into entry window. It looks like it works because the pasted image appears in the document window as expected. However, after saving the work, the image and all following text disappears. theKiwi Posted February 17, 2022 Report Share Posted February 17, 2022 Well it seemed like it should work - I was able to get it saved, and then view it again in the same browser, but the link won't work in another browser, and now won't work in the original browser either after a few minutes. LDJ Posted February 17, 2022 Author Report Share Posted February 17, 2022 I hate to say this (because it makes me feel old ) but I'm done writing code to make things happen in a WYSIWYG environment. I got started using TNG because I wanted a platform to do genealogy, not because I wanted to refresh my tech skills. I remember WordStar and hand-coding HTML – even taught them to others – but I'm very happy that there are buttons that make text bold or centered instead of inserting <></>. Besides, I think I've figured out an easier workaround. I didn't have any problem creating, editing and formatting my page in Blogger originally and then copying/pasting it whole into TNG's Media editor. And TNG's editor didn't cack when I edited the text and formatted the document, including the images. It's only when I pasted a new image – after-the-fact – from another source into the existing document via ^v that things went south. Since the documentation says we can use Word to create Histories, this seems like a legitimate solution. And other editors are easier to use and give me better control over some elements than TNG's editor. I'll try that, lower my expectations titch, and see if it works "good enough" to let me avoid learning the inner workings of the system. I think you’re being slightly disingenuous (a fave word of mine). Out of the box, TNG is awesome for someone starting from scratch, but 2 years in (approx) I’ve never viewed TNG as an out of the box solution…in fact, it’s extensibility (another fave word) is what it makes it so absolutely amazing. There are mods going on that I couldn’t care less about…but OMG, they do nothing but contribute further to TNG’s worth. I’ve dealt with a number of CMS over the years, and to me TNG is just another example of a product that screams “here’s the vanilla install…now here’s how you can go from there” In your circumstance, you’re at the latter stage…how do I go from here…and that’s where we are are here to help. I was a computing administrator starting in the mid-80s and saw several large organizations through several phases of IT implementation. If I mis-used the term in this context, that's a distraction from my point: I was happy with the turnkey features TNG presented. But if the system has a simple drag-and-drop method that appears to allow you to add an image to a document but it doesn't work – in fact, breaks the file – I think that's a problem. -- Lee Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ironically I've never attempted to drag and drop images (or paste them) into a WYSIWYG editor...and so I went off and looked at the history page of the wiki.... https://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php/Histories_-_Creating Quote Adding Images to Body Text For pictures, a little HTML is required. I still think it is easiest for a novice to do the formatting in a Rich Text editor such as Word. A placeholder is set for images, but the images do not transfer over. What needs to be done at this point is to upload a copy of any images embedded within a Word document to the server, then point the html to that file on the server. So, by clicking on the HTML box, all of the HTML will be available to view - and there will be a lot of it. Looks like you need to upload the images to the site first and then do some basic HTML linking....which is how I assumed it would be.
