TEMPLATE 17 - Design Questions

Recommended Posts

DavidMan212

I'm using Template 17 for a large scale Genealogies site having around 12,000 individuals originating from a town in Italy.

I like the design, but I have three items to address which I'm not sure are not being correctly set within the Admin Template Settings or are hard coded in the PHP pages:

1) In the main body of the Index page, there is a LEFT side Welcome column (tailored within the Admin/Template page under "Welcome paragraph", and a RIGHT side, Feature 1 column (tailored within the Admin/Template page under "Feature 1paragraph".   The CENTER section looks to be rather limited in depth, containing ONLY "Search" and "Contact Us".   Is there a way to add content (either with a rotating photo, or other textual data) to the CENTER section?

2) In the FOUR top of the page LINKS, the first TWO seem to be hard coded (and tailored within the Admin/Template page under "Moms Side / label / Person ID / Tree ID"), and they display an ancestor tree view ONLY.    Is there a way to have it display a DESCENDANT view instead since this site is not meant for one person's Mother or Father, rather a deep ancestor origination from the town.

3) The Share link does not seem to do anything within the pages of the Template and I'm wondering how to make it functional.

Example website use is:     http://www.felitto.mantione.net

Thanks!

David

David,

Q1) Yes there is but you would need to do all the coding yourself.

Q2) Try adding the following in the Admin/Template in the 3rd or 4th link

<a style="color:#FFCC33" href="descendvert.php?personID=I1&tree=your treename&generations=10">test</a>

  or

<a style="color:#FFCC33" href="verticalchart.php?personID=I1&tree=your treename&generations=10">test</a>

Q3) I don't use the Share/Hide link myself. I believe it has to do with sharing your data with social networks.

In general the templates that come with TNG work well but as soon as you like to have more than just mostly static templates you need to switch to Wordpress or another CMS.

If you want a different "look & feel" you could also take a look at Genealogy Web Templates by Marscha Bryant.

She offers many more TNG templates in different themes of which many have animated text and photo's that make your website more interactive and vivid.

The TNG templates 19 & 21 are made by her too.

Her templates are fully compatable with TNG and at least to me worth the price.

And if you do run into an issue or have a question you'll find her support is excellent.

Her templates will at least save you the hassle if you're not familiar with WordPress.

Another way is to add the histories template to your data. It comes with TNG but Marsha has a few of her own too and they are for free.

By the way David,

I see your website still runs as http instead of https.

Many genealogists have personal data stored in their databases. Data of either registred users or of living people in the database.

GDPR requires us to make sure that the personal data is saved in a secure way.

SSL (https) adds an extra layer of protection.

So do several other mods that are available. Mods like Bot-Trap_Mod or Image Captcha Mod

I can also advise you to read the wiki pages regarding Security

David,

I too maintain a village genealogy website :   https://genealogie.revestou.fr/index.php and I do not think a roundabout usage of dad and mom sides are the best entry point to the datas of the site. With the template 13, I had them too and I have chosen not to fill in these fields in the template settings ( I mean title and person ID). There are more than 2 families in a village and I prefered to display  the name cloud to propose several entry points. There is a mod to add a cloud of names in any template.

If you really prefer a link to the descendant tree of a certain patriarch, find its url and put it in the template administration, as one of the links in the "feature links" field. This link will appear in the top menu.

Example of a link to a person descendant tree : Antoine Sauvaire

Rob,

Appreciate your input and ideas on the questions.   I've contacted Marscha Bryant and seeing that she has done some amazing work available at a reasonable price, I will likely implement one of her templates.

HUGE thanks for reminding me about the SSL / https void - that's been fixed after working with my host IONOS.

and Katryne,

Thanks for your perspective as a maintainer of a similar village website. I really like your idea of adding the Cloud Mod to my implementation of Template 17 as it might make the visual appearance be a little more balanced.

I'll attempt your idea on the descendant linkage of a particular patriarch.  By the way, I like your Village website layout and am curious as to the main links on the top menu (I tried English, but it didn't translate) - are you using Template 17 or another template?

David, this is template 13 without any modification, look at the settings page below. I think it's pretty much the same as for Nr 17.

Hoping the Forum doesn't mind me asking, but I have two other questions that may/not be related to the Template, rather general TNG PHP file and/or coding.

Looking at my example website

https://felitto.mantione.net:

1) The main index page has TWO locations where you will see "More..." hyperlinked but they go to Blank locations - Why is this happening and how to fix it.

2) Again, main template page, you will see the Main Title (upper left) "Genealogies of Felitto (SA)" which I believe was customized in the Admin/Template - Folder: templates/Template17 -  but I'm unable to recall how to adjust/change the SUB TITLE ("a history of the Felitto family across the world"  below as there appears to be no location on the Admin/Template page to do so.  Any ideas on where a change or edit is possible?

Thanks

David

David,

Regarding your first question.

If you look at Setup >> Configuration >> Template Settings you can see that the feature1 and feature2 links refer to the two empty history pages that are "available".

They don't actualy exist yet so you need to create those two (history)templates yourself.

You can either use the history template that comes wit TNG or you can use the free history template from Marsha (GWT)

There are examples and instruction available on how to create history templates.

The instructions for the TNG history template can be found here: Creating Histories

The instructions for the histories template from GWT com with the template itself.

Here is a link on how to code in general: How to Code

Your second question will be answered in the next post.

Edit: You can use a good texteditor like Notepad++ to create your history template. See this thread to for more info: histories-template-problem-solution

As for question 2:

Look at Setup >> Configuration >> Template Settings

This is where you can change the subtitle.

Here's  an example of one of my History pages. (made with the template  from GWT.

It is still in Dutch (need to do some tranlating :-) ) so sorry for that.

image.png

On the left side are the links to the person pages of the parents,, partners(s), children and a link to other relavant info.

It doesn't have to be about persons like in my example but it can also be about places.

This is a two column example but you can also chose a one or three column design.

I'm sure that if you look at other sites using history templates you can find enough inspiration.
