Can not use one media fil on more IDs

Recommended Posts

Hanne B. Stegemüller

Hi there - and merry, merry Christmas!

I suddenly have a new issue with media files: I can only add them to one person/ID.

I.e. I have many gravestones as they are a wonderful source to death dates, and often there are more names on the stones, so I can use them for more individuals (i.e. both husband and wife). Just to illustrate: This image should be used by both individuals: https://tng.stegemueller.dk/showmedia.php?mediaID=736&medialinkID=517

When I try to link the image to person number two, I get the message, that the image is already in use by another person, and therefore it can not be linked again. This is a new issue as I have tons of family images with several persons on them.

You might need this extra information: Everything is updated: TNG v. 13.1 and template is 209 from Marsha Bryant. I add data from GEDCOM created by Legacy. I do not enter data directly in TNG except for geo codes.

Kindest regards,
Hanne

Hanne,

Are you able to provide a screen shot of the error message.. I'm trying to visualise where you might be getting it from..

Hi RickM

Thank you for your reply!

Here comes a screen shot.

The red Danish error message means: "The image could not be added, probably because another image entry already exists for the specified image file."

I wonder that I might make a mistake when I import the GEDCOM file (and that might be the reason it seems to be a new issue) I do not import existing images which I used to do. And therefore there is no link? Could that be an explanation?

The reason I do not import existing images any more is, that all the images seem to be new and get the actual date, which is wrong.

Do I make a mistake?

I'm not sure that the import is the issue.. I have imported a Gedcom ONCE only when I first started with TNG and input everything into it manually. I'm too scared to try importing Gedcoms in case I destroy the little work I have done..

If you try 'Editing' the picture and scroll down to 'MEDIA LINKS' and add a second person there, is this where you get the error??? See Image as example..

Thank you so very much RickM.

Now I know what my mistake was. I did not edit the image and when I actually did try to edit the image, I selected the ID by writing the number it in the field, but I did not press "Add" as I thought it was added already. I thought that pressing add would mean adding another ID.

Waugh, now Santa can come to my database...

By the way: It is really not dangerous importing a GEDCOM if you just always make a backup of both files and database before import. Then you are safe and can always just upload files and restore the database if something goes wrong. I will be happy to help if you feel unsafe.

I am so pleased you got this sorted.. Sometimes it is the simple things that make our lives hard..

Many is the time I have thought I have saved something or 'Added' something, only to find I hadn't..

And sometime we just need a little push in the right direction which I am happy to have been able to do..

I appreciate your offer and may take you up on it in the new year.. I have a few new folks I have 'found' on Ancestry and MyHeritage (I'm 99.9% sure the info is correct) which I thinking of exporting a gedcom and importing to TNG..

Happy 'Silly Season' to you and yours Hanne..

You are most welcome! And I will make an English guide to you if needed (you must live with the spelling errors :-) )

Happy holidays!
