Templates NearDark2 and NearDawn2 (2nd release candidate) Are Available

Recommended Posts

Bill Herndon

I have published the 2nd release candidates for NearDark2 and NearDawn2 for my 'cleanroom' re-implementations of the templates NearDark and NearDawn.  These new templates are part of a package called eGenea Free Templates and improve on my original TNG templates by providing:

  • Streamlined CSS that's built with easy modification in mind
  • Contemporary web style (new larger fonts, more spacing, "meta" section/footer)
  • Selectable features (...that can be shown or hidden via template settings).
  • Basic localization for Czech (CS), Danish (DA), Dutch (NL), English (EN), French (FR), German (DE), Italian (IT), Norwegian (NO), Polish (PL), Portuguese (PT), Spanish (ES), and Swedish (SV)

Below are images of the new templates NearDark2 and NearDawn2, and NearDark2 is currently running on my own site.  Two additional templates DayLight and NightLight are under development and the 1st release candidates will be available in about 3 weeks.  Check out the Wiki article eGenea Free Templates for a full list of features and download links.

I'm continuing to work on these while creating the new templates DayLight and NightLight and any comments, feature suggestions, and bug reports, would be appreciated.

Thanks

I tested egenea mod and the template Darkdawn2 in a Dutch site. Its works fine only there is no translation of "Featured Photo", "Maternal Ancestors" and "Paternal Ancestors" can I change this in the mod or in the template?

Thank Jan.  I had to put in placeholders for a number of languages, and Dutch was one of the one's I couldn't finish before RC2 went live.

For the translations you identified:  These come from the TNG language files and are installed by the support mod (or you can modify the files directly yourself).  There are about 8 administration text strings and another 10 (or so) site content strings.  I can send a list (in English :- )) if you'd be willing to help with the translations.  Mine would probably be close but not quite accurate.  Spanish and German are the only two other languages that I'm pretty confident with.

Thanks,

Bill Herndon

The language strings for the eGenea Free Templates are:

$admtext['showmomside']  = "Show Link (mother's family)";
$admtext['showdadside']  = "Show Link (father's family)";
$admtext['showmaternal'] = "Show Maternal Ancestors";
$admtext['showpaternal'] = "Show Paternal Ancestors";
$admtext['showcloud']    = "Show Surname Cloud";
$admtext['cloudnames']   = "Number of Surnames";
$admtext['copystmt']     = "Copyright Statement";
$admtext['aboutstmt']    = "Information Statement";
$text['egenea_fphoto']   = "Featured Photo";
$text['egenea_about']    = "About";
$text['egenea_links']    = "Links";
$text['egenea_meta']     = "Meta";
$text['egenea_copy']     = "Copyright";
$text['egenea_momlink']  = "Mother's Family";
$text['egenea_dadlink']  = "Father's Family";
$text['egenea_maternal'] = "Maternal Ancestors";
$text['egenea_paternal'] = "Paternal Ancestors";
$text['egenea_sitemenu'] = "Site Menu";
$text['egenea_tname_ndark2']    = "NearDark2 Template";
$text['egenea_tname_ndawn2']    = "NearDawn2 Template";
$text['egenea_tname_dlight']    = "DayLight Template";
$text['egenea_tname_nlight']    = "NightLight Template";

In case I can get some generous folk out there to help  me with the Czech, Dutch, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, and Portuguese translations.

I'm still testing your tem[late(s): There are 2 issues that I cannot solve:

  1. When I click on the item "Search" in the topmenu there is no action in the site and there is no searchform.
  2. I don't know how to insert an link and an thumbnail in the fields after the features (see the image)

How can I solve the problems.

Jan

You can see my English is not so good. Excuses for that.

Jan... The lack of response from the Search main menu item is known, and I don't have a solution...yet.  In the meantime, for search, you can use the simple form on the homepage navigation bar, or go to the "Links" section and click the links for "Search People" or "Search Families".

Regarding the features:  At this point I was mostly working out the spacing and CSS, I haven't added functionality to the examples for the links and thumbnails.  I'll add examples in the content that uses both in RC3.

Thanks for all the testing.  It's much appreciated.

Bill,

I think you have to do a lot of work:

  • Not all the terms of your templates can be transated within Egenea free.
  • Egenea free adds every time when I change an term a new version of the terms in the file cust-text.php. I claened the file in the mod before I reinstall the mod. Under you can see an example after I cleaned the file often.

Perhaps you can do sometheing with my remarks.

Jan,

Thanks for the Dutch translations.  These actually go into the .cfg file in the support mod.  You have to disable eGenea Support through the Mod Manager; add the new translations, to the .cfg file; then re-enable the mod...which pushes the new translations into the cust_text files for the various languages.  Try that procedure for your installation.  Should fix the doubling behavior you see.

Regarding the terms:  Obviously, when I do it, I use Google translate, and sometimes I have to change the term slightly.  "Site Menu" for example often has to be translated using the modified term, "Website Menu".  I'll go back to NearDark and see if I have the others.

Thanks again,

Bill Herndon

I sent the file to show that the mod egenea free does not work correct.

But the translations are not correct all. I tried some but there are some translations that are only mine preferences and not what you thougt. So be patient and I hope I come with the translation when I have tested all the items, but that is not so simple while I don't understand all the possebilities you meant.

Overall I like the template(s).

Jan,

Let me see if I can be more clear:  This mod, or any mod, can get into a situation where "doubling" in a code file occurs.  It happens when the Mod Manager can't properly de-install a mod because it no longer recognizes the code section that needs to be removed.  You re-install the mod and a whole bunch of code gets duplicated.

Thanks again for testing the template.  I'm incorporating changes now to demonstrate the Feature links and thumbnails and trying to finish some of the other translations.

Here is my translation of the Dutch Placeholder in e-genea free mod

// BEGIN: eGenea Support - Dutch Placeholder
$admtext['showmomside']  = "Toon Link (voorouders moeder)";
$admtext['showdadside']  = "Toon Link (voorouders vader)";
$admtext['showmaternal'] = "Toon Voorouders van de moeder ";
$admtext['showpaternal'] = "Toon Voorouders van de vader";
$admtext['showcloud']    = "Toon de wolk met achternamen";
$admtext['cloudnames']   = "Aantal achternamen";
$admtext['copystmt']     = "Copyrightverklaring";
$admtext['aboutstmt']    = "Information Statement";
$text['egenea_fphoto']   = "Uitgelichte foto";
$text['egenea_about']    = "Over";
$text['egenea_links']    = "Links";
$text['egenea_meta']     = "Meta";
$text['egenea_copy']     = "Copyright";
$text['egenea_momlink']  = "Familie van de moeder";
$text['egenea_dadlink']  = "Familie van de vader";
$text['egenea_maternal'] = "Voorouders van moeders kant";
$text['egenea_paternal'] = "Voorouders van vaders kant";
$text['egenea_sitemenu'] = "Op deze website";
$text['egenea_tname_ndawn2']    = "NearDawn2 Sjabloon";
$text['egenea_tname_ndark2']    = "NearDark2 Sjabloon";
$text['egenea_tname_dlight']    = "DayLight Sjabloon";
$text['egenea_tname_nlight']    = "NightLight Sjabloon";
// END: eGenea Support

The site is only on my testsite and that is offline.

I have still an problem: The item "Startpagina" and "De stamboom" are both linked to inded.php. How can I change this so that only one link is showed?

Have a nice day,

Jan

Jan,

Thanks for the translations.  I'll add these to the .cfg today in preparation for RC3.

This issue of having two links to index.php is interesting.  "Startpagina" is TNG's standard translation of "Home", meaning... "the home page".  So I assume that this is the link being generated by my NearDawn2's call to getLeftIcons().  I'm not sure how the other one is generated.  Is there an Administration -> Setup -> Site Design option for another link that I'm not familiar with?  "Stamboom" translates to "pedigree" (I think).  So I would assume it's intended to be a link to an...ancestor tree?  Are you using a Mod that I need to test compatibility with?

Thanks,

Bill Herndon

Bill,

I solved the problem: In Admin--->Settings it is possible to show or not show the TNG Startpage and the TNG-link. When I set one of them on no I only get one link.

Have an nice day,

Jan

Jan,

That sounds like you have the Add Family Menu Link mod installed since the Show TNG Link is not part of TNG currently, although we have recommended to Darrin to make that mod as part of TNG>

Ken,

Yes, I think you are right. That's the problem when you test many mods. At least I don't know what every mod features.

Thanks.

Jan,

The only reason I know is that I took Michel Kirsch's mod that he had developed for a WordPress user to have a 2nd Home Page type link in the Menu Bar and reworked it so that it could be specified in Admin > Setup > General Settings like some of the other links.  Michel further tweaked it to add a TNG home page input field. Note that I do not use WordPress but TNG has always been a subset of my website.
