OpenStreetMap - Edit place - Geocode not working [Mod Now Upd]

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

For some reason the geocoding facility in Edit place:

osmgeo.gif

has not worked for a while, according to reports. I get the error in TNG v11 and 12 on-line and TNG v13 in localhost.

I'm investigating why, but today I haven't found any mention of a reason on-line.

For what it is worth, OSM and edits work fine on my TNG 11.1.2 offline and TNG 13.0.1 online the appropriate screens come up as well but online i see no map, just the pins... This has been an issue for me since i installed it last week...

What I'm talking about is shown in the image. Input any place and press Enter: The same answer always. Does that input work for you?

You have no map? Nowhere or only the map in Edit Place?

At 2am this morning, I'm having problems with OSM too, but for the first time.

The map view is giving blocks missing (see image), but when I switch that to sat view (same page), it displays correctly.

Hello ! The only problem I meet is the "no internet" warning if I click in the search dield in edit places. But I don't know how long it's been like this, since I have never used this feature, I men the search field on this screen.

OSM is working for me again, no problems.

If I click on Edit (pic above) it takes me to Admin where I can do any necessary edits.

Probably a temporary blip.

Hi all,

Thanks for all replies!

I have just now "made contact" and got a reply at my localhost:

osmok.gif

It seems as if the required "provider" parameter has been changed: It has been the same from when I wrote the mod but it changed this autumn, sometime. I don't use that facility very much so I didn't know until I got alerted by Michel.

There will be an updated mod in the Wiki in a couple of hours (have to eat and more - been working on this for 5 hours straight). Keep an eye on this thread.

Cheers!

Erik

Erik & all

I was puzzled by the above search box problems, thinking where is that box?!

I'm currently using the version below, Sep 2020, updated for TNG13

@Michel KIRSCH  Thanks for the alert! It was a hard thing to understand and then find. But eventually ;-)

Should I be seeing the search box/field with this version?
I'm also thinking why is there a search facility on a map page?

It's in the Edit Place page. When you have a map there the icon is below the + and - icons to the left.

Also in Add New.

If you use OpenStreetMap without the OSM Automatic Geocoding, you need this field to "manually" geocode a new or existing place.

Google Maps geocoding and OSM Automatic geocoding do the job for you when you create a new place from the edit person or the edit family pages.

Erik & Michel

As well as the OSM version above, I'm also using OSM Auto-geocode mod.

I understand now that my Geocode tab replaces the Edit one!

Most of my geocoding is done manually.

In Admin/Places, the list of placenames has three buttons in the Action column.

I edit/geocode places using the first (edit) button.

When you click the Edit button (leftmost) the page opens and you have the button "Show/hide clickable map".

Clicking that button opens the map in the image above. With the "Magnifying glass" icon. You can click it to input a placename and press Enter and if found, the map will zoom in and place a marker there.

Or you can point-and-click in the map, maybe zoom in first using the + icon.

Read more at the Wiki page ;-)

Ahhaaa!, never noticed that before (but wasn't looking).

Now, clicking on the search icon and entering London in the field, I then get Error!, No internet connection?  = amazing, lol.

I have no need for the search there, but I now believe your mod update removes this error.

OK, I will update the mod, eventually.

When I geocode (mostly manually), I use Wikipedia and get the co-ordinates in seconds.

Thanks.

The search box within the map section was designed to allow you to search for a place without having to modify the place name.  For example, if you use historical names for places, you need to search for the current name of the place.

I use historical names for my Acadian ancestors, because the historical name is needed to locate records on these ancestors.

If you use the "Geocode" Tab, you will geocode 10 places in a second.. :-)

I've updated the mod but geocoding (max 10) seems to hang or I get no response.

The search field is working though and that saves using Wikipedia.

Which version of OSM Automatic Geocode are you using? The last is 3b.

I think yours is older than v3a because v3a introduce a new line indicating how many places are not geocoded...

When you've too many results, you can check the "Use first match" option.

and don't forget : once a place is examined by geocode, ti will no more be  examined until you check the "reset" box
