PDF files in Documents won't open

Recommended Posts

Allen

I had a lot of .pdf files that I could not open.  After reading a few posts here, I converted them all from "documents" to "photos".  Now they all open perfectly.  My question is, what did I do?  And should I have done this?  Did I create any other problems.  And what exactly SHOULD be in "documents?"

TNG 13 should open PDF files within the showmedia.php screen.

Do you have any mods that change how showmedia.php behaves?   Go to Admin > Mod Manager and click the Analyze TNG Files.  Scroll down the list and find showmedia.php which should then return a list of mods that make changes to that file.

I do not think that you did not need to convert them.

So you have no mods that make any changes to showmedia.php.  Do you have any media mods that might cause the PDF display not to work.

So a few questions...

* What do you mean by "could not open"? Do you mean that they are not displaying?

* When you say that you converted them from "documents" to "photos" what do you mean by "converted"? The reason I ask is that I am getting errors on your site, and I think that you say "converted" you mean you changed a PDF to an image...but in fact you may just mean you moved the PDFs?

The reason I ask is that I went here...

https://www.wilson-mcelmurry.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=1681

That points to a PDF that is meant to be located at...

https://www.wilson-mcelmurry.com/documents/Adam_Symes_and_His_Descendants.pdf

...and that file doesn't exist. I suspect part of the problem may be that you have moved the PDFs to a different location?

I appreciate all the help.  I don't think I did anything, but "Adam_Symes_and_His_Descendants.pdf" seems to be opening correctly now.  If one or both of you have a chance, could you look again?  I'm  a beginner at this and I think I just need some more experience.

Phil, to answer your questions:  1:  Yes, when I said could not open, I meant display.  2: I took a screen shot of the page where I did what I called "conversion".  You'll see that I thought I was using the "convert selected to" button.

Ken, 1: I only have 2 mods.  The image captcha mod that came embedded and the citation master mod.  Neither seem to be causing any issues.

To both of you, thanks again.  I think I am working some of my beginner issues out.  But please do visit the site any time and look around.  I appreciate all the advice I can get.

Ahh, the language of TNG...it takes some getting used to.

So, when you did a conversion, you didn't do what I thought you meant...which was changing PDFs to images (which you shouldn't do). Instead, the conversion you did is basically saying to TNG "include these PDFs in my photo album" or "consider them photos".

There's a slight problem in doing that....your PDFs now appear in amongst your photos. Just go here...

https://www.wilson-mcelmurry.com/browsemedia.php?mediatypeID=photos

...and in the search (top left kind of) search for "PDF" without the speech marks, and you see at least 3 PDFs in amongst your photos.

https://www.wilson-mcelmurry.com/browsemedia.php?mediasearch=pdf&mediatypeID=photos&tngpage=&tree=tree1&tnggallery=0

If you look at the last one (Willis and Allen) and go to Burrell F Willis....

https://www.wilson-mcelmurry.com/getperson.php?personID=I694&tree=tree1

If you scroll down, you'll see the PDF sitting amongst the photos. See the attached image.

So...let's deal with the PDFs first. My suggestion is that you remove them from your Photos album...I think although that appears to have worked, it's worked in a messy way....and it's going to keep causing you problems. Better to get it right on first set up.

Then you need to address why the PDFs aren't showing up as documents. I'm not going to cover that here...but to be clear...I'm basically saying that you should go back to how the problem was and attempt to fix it another way...converting to a photo is not the best approach. I suspect that some of the PDFs were in the wrong location but you have bene fixing that?

Now...speaking of photos. I note that many of the jpg files in my image don't show thumbnails. I was going to say that you should generate thumbnails...but I suspect you are having problems there also? Right?

I clicked on one of the images and waited for it to load....and waited...and waited....

I was about to add to this post that images aren't working either, but then it finally appeared....but that is a 2.7 Mb file...that's big! If you are going to include such high quality images on your site, you're going to have to be prepared for people saying that things aren't loading. I'm on fibre broadband and it took a while for me...so I'm not sure how quick it will be for others!
