Family Chart - multiple generations

Recommended Posts

Branko

Hi,

Is the Family Chart view somehow able to be controlled via a number of generations or is there a mod that enables this to be done. I am looking to be able to easily locate persons via a chart to ensure that the right person belongs to the right family regardless of genealogical relationship lines. I know that the Family Chart basically does that now but it is limited in what it display's, I'm looking for more generations.

The normal Ancestors and Descendants charts follow a genealogy line and exclude siblings, which I understand.

In  Setup >> Configuration >> Chart Settings

For each chart you can choose how many generations

I have max set at 8, initial set to 4

I do not believe the number of generations applies to the Family Chart.  Its purpose is to show the parents, children, and spouses

You try the Maternal and Paternal Lines mod and see if that provides what you want.

Hi Michael,

Thank you, but those settings don't apply to the Family Chart.

Hi Ken,

Thank you, it might do the trick from what the WiKi indicates. The uploaded image is something like what I'm looking for, its almost like a Ancestors tree except I want to start in say the bottom left corner and I want it to show me everybody connected to the tree from there up.

Thanks Michael,

Will have a look at the Tables of Descendants mod. Initially I'm after a graphic display rather than tabular.

I was going to suggest this earlier but thought it wasn't what you wanted, in Ancestors/Vertical view with newest person bottom-middle and all the way back.

Yes I do use this view but it only includes the relationship line, does not include siblings. Lets face it, this view would be OK if there are no other options and if it didn't revert back to the Individual view if you click on any of the people. Its very circular..... To get around this I would use Tree Draw to pictorially see that I've got the right people in the right place particularly as individuals names keep on repeating within families.

I think I need a break from this lol.

Not quite what you want but Descendants / Register view gives all generations and siblings.

I'm now officially "on holiday"

I have a program, that allows me to view my whole family tree at once. "Ancestors and Descendants, Siblings / Children and Cousins / Children". It will also do duplicate profiles  etc.  It also gives me the option to scroll left / right - up / down. As you say, I can start in the bottom left hand corner and scroll back in time to the 1500's. You also have the option to click on any profile and edit the profile and then save.

Hello,  you obviously find the PC software useful for your needs, since you've posted a sample page twice recently,  but  haven't mentioned the name of the program.  Perhaps you could share the product's name since you're seem to be promoting it?

I should add that I use Family Historian for all data input, then export to TNG.

Thank you for the reply, what software are you using? I use Legacy as my master and export via GEDCOM to TNG.

Hi Ron,

I use Legacy as my master and export to TNG via GEDCOM, this I do frequently.

When I need a look at a part of the tree I use Tree Draw Legacy (which integrates with Legacy) as the Legacy software itself has pretty ordinary charting abilities, at least for me.

What I was/am looking for via TNG is the ability to show the whole tree for/from any descendant and for it to show every person on the tree from that person regardless of relationship. It would also be good if Vertical orientation were available like for the Ancestors tree.

For me this is ideal when reviewing the information to ascertain that people are linked correctly.

Branko,

NOTE:my bad....I  posted to the wrong person!!!!  I am interested in what software created the schematic Edglimited posted .

Ignore my prior post, Branko, it was intended for EdgLimited.

Unfortunately, as you've discovered, TNG doesn't offer an 'overall' tree chart, with siblings, etc.  However, TNG does offer the Ancestor 'standard' chart  which has a dropdown for children links to additional charts for tree navigation.

Apparently the product Edglimited noted is available as freeware on softpedia:  https://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Miscellaneous/Visual-Family-Tree.shtml.  The version there is v4.04 dated nov 1,2017.

There is two versions of that software program, one is called Vista Family Tree and the other is called Visual Family Tree. I have both, one on the PC and the other on a USB Stick. The company that offered the program/s, or rather the inventor, (for better words) stopped offering updates and upgrades in or around 2016-17.

There's no promotion. One is called Visual Family Tree and the other is Vista Family Tree.

Thanks for confirming.  I downloaded the Visual FT version and imported my gedcom (exported from Family HIstorian for TNG usage), just to give it a look.  Would be nice to have a 'hand' pointer to move about in the right side rather than the scroll bars, but fairly quick load of 14k individuals.

Googled about but couldn't find anything searching for Vista Family Tree.

I have a copy of both software packages in zip. Visual is fast and takes a bit of patience to get the hang of, but it works well. I have used it since 2014 and have yet to use all functions. As you said, loads very fast and also gives you the option to view multiple trees (one at a time) at startup. Vista was removed as you say and it's very hard to find a site, that offers it as a download. The "hand pointer would be a gift, there maybe an option (for it) in setup, but I haven't searched for it. Maybe the original author had it in mind but gave up and went fishing.

Assume both named products by same author, any difference between Vista vs. Visual versions?

Both by the same author. Visual works on Windows, but will also work on Ubuntu with Wine Loader. (that's what I use). Vista is for Mac, Linux "or" Windows if Java is installed.

Language option was another feature, as well as a few other tweaks.

Thanks for the information; I only use Windows apps.  General layout and portable installation reminds me a bit of GenViewer, which of course is read only of Gedcoms, and there's a GenViewer for Legacy.

Updated:corrected software name.

While I have not used this for a few years, I vaguely remember that Genopro does what you are asking for.
