Custom Gedcom Tags from Legacy 9.0 (_FREL & _MREL)

Recommended Posts

Don Quigley

Legacy has  custom Gedcom tags for sources attached to child relationships to their father and mother (_FREL and _MREL).  I use them for documenting who a person's parents were/are.  They are in the Legacy-exported Gedcoms that I upload to TNG, but do not appear to be used or shown in m y TNG family tree.  Is that correct?

Example:

0 @F625@ FAM
1 HUSB @I4868@
2 _PREF Y
1 WIFE @I4869@
2 _PREF Y
1 MARR
2 SOUR @S3950@
3 PAGE Winfield, family 20, Americus Morgan Family; (ancestry.co
4 CONC m : accessed Jan 27, 2016)
2 SOUR @S3964@
3 PAGE Children of Dennis & Hannah (Edmunds) Philleo: 110-111.
1 CHIL @I4898@
2 _FREL
3 SOUR @S3964@
4 PAGE Children of Dennis & Hannah (Edmunds) Philleo: 110-111.
2 _MREL
3 SOUR @S3964@
4 PAGE Childre
n of Dennis & Hannah (Edmunds) Philleo: 110-111.

Don,

level 2 custom tags I think get imported by TNG but if these are new tags, you may need to

  1. use the Import Custom Event Types only option
  2. go to Admin > Custom Events table
  3. mark the new tags you want as Accept
  4. import your data again

Don,
The _FREL and _MREL tags are treated as standard tags at level 2 under the CHIL record at level 1.  Unfortunately TNG ignores any level 3 or level 4 records attached to the _FREL and _MREL tags.  So to get those sources to import, you will need to make a mod to customize lines 100-106 of gedimport_families.php.

Per TNG Users Group emails, Darrin Lythgoe says that TNG will import parent-child relationships if there is one (there was not in my example above), but does not support sources for those relationships. He will consider doing so in the future.
