Selecting a Template

Recommended Posts

Ted Steele

Hello. I have used TNG to create a website for a client using template 14. It turned out well (e.g., the client is happy) but I did very little customizing of the design.

I now want to use TNG to create my own website, and so I have been browsing the templates this morning.

I have been married twice, with children by my first wife. We were divorced years ago and my second wife and I have been married for over 25 years. I have also created extensive family trees for two related surnames (Ebbets and Lowe) that contain entries far beyond my own family. So I will want to include all of these (or links to all of these) with my site.

I'm just starting to plan this, but at the moment here's what I think I want:

(1) "His Side / Her Side" for me and my first wife (the mother of my children).

(2) Inclusion of the tree for my second wife.

(3) Inclusion of the trees for the Ebbets and Lowe families.

I kinda like the look of Template 10, and it appears that I could use the "Features" panel on the RHS for the three trees in items (2) and (3).

Templates 13, 14, 17, and 18 contain "His side / Her Side" plus "Third Link" "Fourth Link" in the header, which I like, if I could add a "Fifth Link" andthey can be used to link to the three trees in items (2) and (3). But I'm guessing that those would then have to be three separate TNG sites. Right?

Is there a way to have FIVE separate trees (five GEDCOM downloads) in single TNG site?

As I recall, the various templates have differing "features," not all of which are obvious from just looking at the examples. So if anyone has any "good news/bad news" about any of these templates I'd love to learn it before I dive in.

You guys were very helpful to me when I first started my client website. The TNG community appears to be great and I am looking forward to diving back in.

Thanks, Ted

Yes, you can have separate trees.

But I would suggest that at least for all the people related to you from either marriage etc, that you have all that in a single tree - otherwise you'll need to have duplicate entries in the trees for people like yourself, since TNG can't "see" across trees to for example calculate relationships.

Thanks for your note Roger. But there's no real need to search across the trees or to make connections between the various trees. Other than for my children, there are no relationships.

In looking at the template choices, I am drawn to template 10. BUT, I would want to modify the banner at the top from:

His Side   Her Side   Contact

to:

His Side   Her Side#1   Her Side #2   Other Family#1   Other Family#2   Contact

Before I "commit" to this template, can someone advise me how much bother it would be to add those three additional tabs to that banner and to have each of the five tabs link to a separate tree.

Thanks, Ted

Ted,

I have a similar situation.  My children and grandchildren are all with my first wife.  I have been married to my second wife for over 19 years.  When I first set up TNG (2005) I made sure that I could create 2 data bases and 2 installations of TNG.  Darrin told me that as long as I was using 1 URL I could install TNG in 2 sub-folders.  I do that on my site with one version for all my family with my first wife, including her family for my children.  It does show my second wife, but not her family.  The second version is for my second wife's family.  I am in that one as her husband and my children as her step children, but none of the rest of my family.  Each version uses a different template, 14 for my wife's and 10 for mine.  For my version I use 16 branches in 1 tree to separate the families for privacy.  My wife's version has 1 tree and no branches as she comes from a huge family that all seem to be inter-related and everyone knows about everyone else anyway.  (She has over 70 first cousins).  Another advantage for me is that my version is all English while my wife's version is English and Spanish.

This approach requires that you have a simple HTML file that works as a switch between the two versions. Initial access goes to that HTML code which then allows selection of the appropriate version.  You can see how mine works at www.ourfamilyinfo.org.  I would be glad to send you the HTML file that I use along with the CSS file for it.  It  would be a simple edit to make it yours, and I can certainly help you with that.  If you are interested contact me off list at denton@starstream.net.

Denton,

What a clever solution. And it works. Thanks for sharing your URL as it gives me a look at a template 10 site in production. Interesting, too, that you used a fan-chart for one of your "trees." (I don't think that'd work for me, but it's fun to see how flexible TNG is.)

So, you purchases ONE domain name (ourfamilyinfo.org) and ONE (?) TNG license? Or did you need a separate license for each of the two sub-folders?

It also occurs to me that I might be able to use the "Features" box on the RHS to link to the other three trees that I would have in "sub-folders."

Still, if I can modify the top menu bar in template 10 to display the five trees I have that'd be my first choice. But I like your idea! Thanks for sharing it. (I may be back...) Ted

Ted,

Glad to be helpful.  I specifically asked Darrin about this when I set it up.  He said that it only requires 1 TNG license as long as it is on just 1 domain name.  I set up the 2 databases first then did full installs in each sub-folder so that the databases could be properly linked.  As administrator you will deal with both as if they were on different URLs, that is backups, etc. are handled separately.  Most users tend to save the sub-folder home page as their favorite, and that gets them there without going through the HTML front page.

I am trying out the fan chart as the default on my side since everyone that I show it to likes it. It is simple to select in ADMIN/SETUP.  You can easily get 8 generations on one page and see very clearly where the missing persons are (where I need to focus my attention in my research).  Besides it is pretty :)

Thanks to all of yur suggestions. I am pleased to say that I now have a "basic" TNG website up and running. Just two trees so far, but I'm pretty sure I can squeeze the other three in in due time. Onward! Ted

Denton,

I'm back to ask a bit more about setting up TNG instances in a subdirectory.

I am using template 10 which now successfully has the trees for me and my first wife. I was going to try to modify that template to add another link on the menu bar for my second (and current... and final) wife. But that turns out to be a major job. But I think I have another solution.

My question might make more sense if you first view my website at https://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=papian. Notice that in the Features box I have links to the Papian Family (my now wife), the Lowe Genealogy, and the Ebbets Genealogy. Currently this link to GEDCOMs that I have uploaded to WorldConnect on the RootsWeb server. (But RootsWeb isn't supporting any updates to Worldconnect, so those are now of limitged value.)

My thought is to install two more TNG templates as subdirectories of my primary TNG template (SteeleFamilyHistory.net). Can I do that? If so, I would install one TNG template for my wife's Papian family, and the other one for my Lowe and Ebbets genealogies. So the directory structure would look something like:

SteeleFamilyHistory.net (as it is now)

SteeleFamilyHistory.net/Papian

SteeleFamilyHistory.net/Lowe-Ebbets

Please let me know if you think I could set it up this way, and if so, how to go about it. Thanks so much, Ted
