editing out items in the media dropdown menu

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I wish to edit out items in the media drop down menu

such as albums, all media, etc. for public users for a cleaner navigation.

I have looked in the genlib and browsemedia php's,

but as far as I can see, neither show signs of how to edit the media tab.

It would be nice to edit the "find" dropdown menu if possible.

I have successfully edited the info tab by editing out code and copying allow to the admin such as this:

$menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "statistics", 0 ), "stats-icon", "", "databasestatistics");
    // $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsetrees", 0 ), "trees-icon", "", "trees");
    // $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsebranches", 0 ), "branches-icon", "", "branches");
    $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsenotes", 0 ), "notes-icon", "", "notes");
    // $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsesources", 0 ), "sources-icon", "", "sources");
    // $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browserepos", 0 ), "repos-icon", "", "repositories");
    if( $allow_admin ) {
        $menu .= tngddrow(($cms['adminurl'] ? $cms['adminurl'] : $cms['tngpath']."admin.php"), "admin-icon", "", "administration");
        $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "showlog", 0 ), "unlock-icon", "", "mnushowlog");
        $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsetrees", 0 ), "trees-icon", "", "trees");
        $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsebranches", 0 ), "branches-icon", "", "branches");
        $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browsesources", 0 ), "sources-icon", "", "sources");
        $menu .= tngddrow(getURL( "browserepos", 0 ), "repos-icon", "", "repositories");
        $tngconfig['menucount'] += 2;

Thanks! and any help is well appreciated!  😄

:D  Hi Erik!

I did look thru the information of the mod you created with interest.

It is useful for protection that I can add for my site for sure.

I plan on using it after my menu navigation is set.

What i first want to finish is editing out tabs in the menu dropdown.

I did manage already to edit out the tabs that your mod  is setup to do.

unfortunately i need more control over the media dropdown.

As well i am having a difficult time trying to change the names on the submenus "find" dropdown.

"search people" is clear enough,

but "surnames, first names, places and dates" are a little misleading for someone new on the site;

as they fall under the "find" menu.

Jeff,

The mod affects only not-logged-in guests. For logged-in users there is no change. Try it with the original Media DD first, then maybe edit the rest.

A suggestion re. the Find options:

I use "Find..." for selections with a Search form, and "List..." for selections w/o. (See my site https://xerxx.se - English flag up left, no DD but it's the same)

😄 Thanks Eric!

not sure which  .php to edit to change like yours to "List Surnames", "List Places", etc.

As well, a little history on why i am trying to edit out the dropdowns;

i have 2 trees.

1 has all people and selected media.

the other tree has no people and personal family media.

i give access to immediate family for all trees.

i give access to only the one tree with people and limited media for everyone else.

everyone needs to login to see my site.

I am working on open access family page links to add to my welcome page;

that will help people determine if they are related and want to register.

Jeff 😄

Add the below to

languages / the language / cust_text.php

and edit the right part to your liking - I think that's all the text in the Find DD:

$text['surnames'] = "Surnames";
$text['firstnames'] = "First Names";
$text['searchnames'] = "Search People";
$text['searchfams'] = "Search Families";
$text['searchsitemenu'] = "Search Site";
$text['places'] = "Places";
$text['dates'] = "Dates";
$text['calendar'] = "Calendar";
$text['cemeteries'] = "Cemeteries";
$text['bookmarks'] = "Bookmarks";

Would be something I would want to have in future version to remove or comment out recordings and videos.

:D Eric,

Thanks greatly for the tip on editing the cust file!

It worked perfectly once I added it into it.

If i get away from working in the php files,

i forget where i made adjustments before sometimes!

Thanks again Erik! :D

jeff g,

(Import/Export >> Secondary Processes  >> Trim Media Menus)

From the help: Trim Media Menus

TNG includes menu options for several standard media collections (Photos, Documents, Histories, Headstones, Videos and Recordings). If you don't have any items for one or more of those collections, you can remove them from the menus by clicking this option. If you add an item for any of the "trimmed" collections in the future, it will automatically be added back for you.
