WP and TNG Missing sidebars, header and footer

Recommended Posts

Hanne

Hi there everybody

I hope you can help me, as I have been struggling all day:

(I am on Windows 10 Pro, and on my WP website I use theme called Enfold.)

1. I have installed the plug-in, and I have set up the page (TNG-site): https://root.stegemueller.dk/thenextgeneration/ like all other pages on my site, but for reason I can't have this page displayed like all my other pages on my site. It should look like this example with a header, a sidebar, and a footer: https://root.stegemueller.dk/foedderne-1-alen-over-gulvet/

2. I can do a search on the TNG-site, and the first resultpage displays correctly with header, sidebar and footer. But i can't go to ie. page 2

3. All the links below the image on the front page don't work. I really don't know what has happened. I think they worked yesterday, but I'm not sure. I have tried to recover the db form yesterday, but It didn't help.

4. The plug-in offers " Replace TNG homepage with Wordpress page" and I would very much like that, but I can't make it work. Any suggestions?

----

Best regards,

Hanne B. Stegemüller,

Denmark

I can't decide what your homepage should be

https://stegemueller.dk/

https://root.stegemueller.dk/

This link is not working https://stegemueller.dk/tng2/ (404 error)

At a guess, you have a "path" problem. In TNG Admin, what is your root path ? (Paths and Folders)

Also in TNG Admin, Site Design and Definition : what is showing in the first two fields ?

What URL is your host server pointing to ?

Thank you so much for your answer. I understand that you are confused! So am I! 😎

Right now I have tried to start from scratch installing everything from scratch. Every old pages were deleted and I try to install again.

My homepage should be https://root.stegemueller.dk/ and the landing page for the TNG-site should be: https://root.stegemueller.dk/TheNextGeneration/

At the moment I do not have imported my GEDCOm file.

According to the tooll in the plug-in: Path to TNG files:  /home/stegemue/root.stegemueller.dk/TheNextGeneration/

According to the plugin: URL to TNG Admin:  https://root.stegemueller.dk/TheNextGeneration/admin.php

I have made a fresh GED.file form Legacy, but I really can't import it, The GEDCOM should be OK but it doesn't show up. I have nearly 5.000 individuals, but they are not show. This is an operation I have tried many, many times without troubles. I don't understand what is going on.

I would be so happy if you can help me!

Best regards,

Hanne, Denmark

Hello again - and thank you so much for all the help provided! :-) I love the Internet

I will give a status:

  • https://root.stegemueller.dk/the-next-generation-database/ Is working now with footer, header and sidebar! That is just perfect. Now I just have to customize, but that is the funny part :-)
  • This means that the original problem is solved! Great.
  • But I suddenly have another issue: I can't import my GED-file. It is like TNG does not communicate with the database and the site. I have controlled the config-file, and the variables about the database (user name, database name, password and so) are correct.
    • I am on Cloudflare... but have neber had this issue before (I just read another post, where Cloudflare was the problem).
    • I always rename the gedcom-folder and the backup-folder, like Darrin suggets. I did that during the setup (via readme-file), but the new names of the folders were not visible in the FTP-program. I then created the folders myself.
    • I have tried both import methods several times. The GED-file is in the correct folder on the server.
    • I wonder whether it is correct, that the config file doesn't mention a path for GED folder? How would TNG know where to look for the file to import if the path is not specified in the config?
    • I have tried this operation thousands of times, and I never had troubles before.

Does anyone have a hint?

And another question: Are there any hints about " Please customize this page! " displayed in the buttom af the page?

Update:

  1. I gave up having TNG to import, so I reloaded a backup SQL-file, and now people are shown - but I really don't understand why I can't import my file.
  2. So now my only remaining question is: How do I style my site when I do not use a template? There is some styling all ready that looks lik template 1, so I have done something with that one using this tool: https://xerxx.se/tcb/tcb12/template1/template.php but I can't find all the fields and not everything is working

If you go to this pager

https://root.stegemueller.dk/TheNextGeneration/admin.php

and login, you should be able to import the GEDCOM file from the Import area there?

You should NOT use a TNG template with with WordPress integration. Set Template Switching to Off, and then you can style the default TNG page styles to match your WordPress theme's colours using the file

/css/mytngstyle.css

The changes are minimal usually - in my site I've just made changes to get the colours of text backgrounds the same - you can see the style over-rides here

Regarding using the TNG Colouring Book (link in prev post):

The .css generated by TCB should be good to use in any template _and_ no template (placed in the (root/)css/ folder.

The .css contains only colours and the one used is "Template 1" that only contains the basic classes = the same for all templates (and none).

If the design (layout etc) is different, it's probably not from the TCB .css.

Best regards,

Erik

Hi XerxX and the Kiwi

Thank you very much for your answers and input. I have been away on holiday without my password; that is why this answer comes very late - I am sorry.

I am quite happy with the results from  TNG Colouring Book  I don't need so much more styling. Darrin suggested, that I used /root.stegemueller.dk/TheNextGeneration/css/mytngstyle.css which I did.

Have a great day!

Best regards,
