Simple SEO Mod v6 - Meta keyword support for any custom event, HTML encoding

Recommended Posts

Bill Herndon

I have released Simple SEO versions 11.0.0.6 (TNG 11.0+), 11.1.0.6 (TNG 11.1), and 11.1.1.6 (TNG 11.1.1+).

This version changes the way in which meta keywords are generated, using a list of GEDCOM tags instead of individual tags in the mod parameters.  So now...any custom event's value can be added to meta keywords by adding its GEDCOM tag to the list.  Aliases (tag: ALIA) and nicknames (tag: NICK) are supported by default.  Other useful tags might include occupation (tag: OCCU) or married name (commonly _NAMM).  Individual names and nicknames entered in TNG still have built-in support.  This version also adds HTML encoding to keyword values to correct cases where a quoted nickname or other instances of special characters are included in a name or event value.

This version is optional for Simple SEO mod users.

Please see the Simple SEO Wiki page for additional information.

I have released Simple SEO version 12.0.3.6.  This is a minor update that adds compatibility for TNG 12.0.3.  It is only required for users of that version.

Please see the Simple SEO Wiki page for additional information.

The first patch release has been posted for Simple SEO v6.  Version 12.0.3.6a for TNG 12.0.3 is available, and I have added version 12.0.0.6a         for TNG releases 12.0, 12.0.1, and 12.0.2.  This version:

  • Uses TNG 12 Mod Manager functionality to preserve mod parameter values across installations
  • Fixes language file string insertions to conform to TNG 12 standards

This is an optional update for TNG 12 Simple SEO users.  See the Simple SEO Wiki page for additional information.

Are the key words comma delimited? ie, Genealogy, Family History, English Genealogy, Welsh Genealogy, Genealogy Books.

wmpbrown...

Meta tag keywords are generated by the software.  On individual pages names are added by default (surname and given name); nicknames (Gedcom: NICK) and aliases (Gedcom: ALIA) are configured in mod parameters out of the box; other standard pieces of information and Custom Events can be added by using their corresponding Gedcom tag in the mod parameters.  Occupation (Gedcom OCCU), for example, is a good one to add.  On family pages, the surnames and given names of both spouses, along with nicknames and aliases, are added to the HTML headers by default.

Please see the Simple SEO Wiki page for additional information.

If you want general keywords--subject, titles, tag lines...stuff like that--added to every TNG generated page then I would recommend modifying the TNG supplied file "meta.php".  TNG automatically includes information in meta.php, and Simple SEO is compatible in that it doesn't interfere with what TNG does with keywords in meta.php.

So I don't need to actually add anything? I've gone over the wiki, but the way it reads, I have to add something for each person, family or group, but not clear for key word searches from search engines.
Yeah, not going into the php  files, I'd bugger those up. I thought that's what this mod did, add the meta tags.

wmpbrown... Correct, you don't need to do anything.  By default, the mod's software inserts meta keywords into the HTML header for:

  • surname and given name
  • aliases
  • nicknames

Those three are added automatically on every individual and family page.  After an individual's page has loaded, instruct your browser to show you the page source and you'll see the meta keyword headers.  Remember that meta keywords are not always used by search engines, and different search services use them in different ways.  Google claims not to use keywords at all, but most users find that their pages rank better when there are connections between those keywords and other elements of the page.

Most of the rest of what Simple SEO does is to simplify the page titles.  Default TNG titles are so complicated (full birth and death dates and locations) Google simply rewrites the titles in searches...in unpredictable ways...and this impacts page rankings.
