TNG & Wordpress Integration

Hello,

I've been working to put both WP and TNG on my home computer under localhost.  I've got both systems db built and also activated the TNG WP integration plug in.  I've followed all of the directions; but when I click on my genealogy tab, I get a white page.  I'm not sure where to go at this point.  I've reviewed the forums; and one thing that seems promising comes from the below linked thread.  Unfortunately, someone jumped in with an off topic question about sign in integration and the thread died.  A question that was asked before the thread closed was what happens when you type in :   http://localhost/genealogy/surnames.php .  well, when I type this in, I get the following error message.

HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found

The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

This tells me that the base URL for  http://localhost/genealogy/ which is being used to integrate TNG and WP seems not to resolve / work.  does this suggest a solution???

The answer to this question was to check that you've update global variables and  to check your TNG config urls? I've gone ahead and attached pics of relevant screen shots.  you can see that my root path is set, and I've updated global variables as well.  what can I do further to get this plug in to work??

thank you for any help provided.

Hello Merv,

I went back and checked what's happening.  for clarity (my mistake), it's not showing a white screen; but rather showing below like the URL isn't working.

Hi,

I don't use wordpress, so my knowledge of the add-on is nil. If the suggested fixes attached to my previous comment don't work for you, then hopefully someone with tng/wp knowledge will jump on here and help you out. Good luck.

That seems to suggest that the plugin is not active.

Revisit your permalink settings and check it's set as recommended.

That looks Okay.

Sorry if all that is quite basic.

Not sure what else to suggest

Just a shot in the dark, but the Path to TNG files doesn't have a drive letter in my setup... it's just:

/home/editedusername/public_html/tng/

then of course you want to Save Changes and Update TNG Variables

>>  BTW, in TNG site design and construction > Genealogy URL should be http://localhost:81/tng/

according to the instructions in the wiki, that's not correct.  it should be set to the permalink.  are you saying the instructions are incorrect?  or am I misunderstanding something??  instructions below.

  1. Go to TNG Admin at http://YourSite.com/tng/admin.php and in the Setup ------> General Settings ------> Site Design and Definition set the Genealogy URL to the permalink you set for the TNG page above.

anyone else have some thoughts?  surprising to me that a plug in that's been out so long has outstanding issues.  I'm more inclined to think I'm doing something wrong.  I'm still thinking that the 404 error on the http://localhost/genealogy/surnames.php is a clue to what is going on.  thoughts??

folks,

here's another clue.  neither the TNG Wiki http://tng.lythgoes.net/wiki/index.php?title=Using_TNG_and_WordPress_with_the_tng-wordpress-plugin nor the instructions on http://uniquelyyourshosting.net/how-to-integrate-wordpress-with-tng/ mention this; but the https://wordpress.org/plugins/tng-wordpress-plugin/ website shows the following.  any idea what this is or whether it's relevant to anything??  I've never seen anything about "pretty" permalinks.

Limitations

  1. 'Pretty' permalinks must be turned on.

You are right. I have a 3 wp-tng installations. 2 of them have tng and one of them has genealogy. All 3 sites work fine. URL stated in here does not affect the operation of plugin.

WP-TNG is very picky with it's set up.
You may try what Merv has suggested and try another theme.
For me WP, themes 2011-2014 and Suffusion work well with plugin.

This is referring to that you can't use the default basic permalink setting.

Have you tried a different theme?

Have you tried setting your server to use the normal Port 80 not Port 81?

Why is the drive letter showing in the path - is there a way in your server to set a document root that doesn't involve the drive letter?

Have you tried a different Permalink setting - e.g. Month and Name?

Hello Kiwi,

yes, I've tried a different theme.  tried the 2015 theme, basically just tried 1st one in the list.

I've not tried setting my server to port 80 because I have a MySQL installation that conflicts.  xammp uses MariaDB.  that's why I changed the ports.

not sure which path you're talking about; but I went ahead and removed the "c:\" from the path in the TNG Wordpress Integration "path to TNG files".  is this the one you're talking about?

I've tried several permalink settings.

Roger,

is it possible that sinse I've attempted to set this up on a local apache server with xammp that the tng.php does something unexpected???

That is quite possible, but I don't know for sure.

I have it setup on my MacBook Pro that I have been working on setting up, but don't have WordPress or the plugin setup there yet - haven't had a chance to get that installation finished, but I'm expecting that it "should" work.

OK - 30 minutes later - I've got WordPress installed on my localhost and installed the tng.php plugin and it's working at

http://localhost/Geneaogy/

with the plugin active.

So I know it can work on the Apache, PHP, and MySQL under Mac OS X at least.

Roger,

probably this doesn't make a difference; but the Mac version runs with MySQL, rather than MariaDB??  the XAMMP for Windows now runs with MariaDB, rather than MySQL.

I'm getting to the point that the only thing left is the fact that I'm using port 81 vs 80.  thinking I perhaps just start completely over, or maybe load it up on my live server temporarily to see if it works.  that's something I'll need to think about a bit, to make sure I don't mess up my current TNG system.

I just have to be missing something; but I've looked at this so many times this weekend - I can just about set it up by heart.

I appreciate all your suggestions.  I'll keep plugging along.

David

Folks,

I'm going to close this thread as "closed : unresolved".  I've spent probably 20 hours on this; and it simply doesn't work.  I want to thank all of you that responded.  I've started using the Clees method and have in pretty short order gotten integration with menu URL's.  now you guys can look for my probably upcoming CSS modification questions :>)
