Tuning for Mobile Display

Recommended Posts

Ken Roy

A whole series of mods to make TNG more responsive in mobile environments on both smart phones and tablets have been added to the TNG Wiki and are anchored in an overview article called Tuning for Mobile Display

Mods included are

You can find more information in the following locations:

Thanks to Gustave Dahl who initially investigate and created a mod to add the Tablesaw jQuery plugin for Responsive Tables and provided help through out the beta test.

Thanks to Graham Chamberlain, Del Groves, Roger Moffat, Robin Richmond, Colin Spencer, David A. Jamieson, David Beckwith, and Rudi Schmit for testing and feedback during the last 6 weeks beta test.

Thanks to Darrin Lythgoe for providing the code to suppress the Person and Family previews for smart phones.

Please read the instructions closely in the TNG Wiki mod articles, since some mods must be uninstalled before installing the new mods.

Thanks to Ken for spearheading this huge effort. There was an at times mind boggling flurry of messages about this as it was being developed and tested, and I certainly couldn't keep up with it at times, but the end result makes TNG much more presentable on mobile devices and hopefully forms a good basis for Darrin to implement much/all of it in to TNG directly.

Hi Ken

Firstly, thank you and the other community members for creating such great mods for TNG. I am a new to TNG and have a problem installing the 'Mobile Site Enhancements' mod. If this is the wrong place to for this post, please let me know.

I unzipped the 'Mobile Site Enhancements' mod files into my TNG mods folder, but when I go to the Mod Manager in TNG, it states that it cannot install this mod. When I check the details, I see the following line:

 line 322: %target:css/tngmobile.csstarget file missing

I didn't see that the tngmobile.css file was included in the basic installation of TNG. Could you provide any help on what I have missed?

I am using TNG v10.1.1.

Many Thanks

Giles

TNG 10.1.0 does include tngmobile.css in the css folder in your site's root. If it's not there, you should check the files you downloaded, or get a fresh download from Darrin's site and upload the missing files.

Thank you, Roger. For some reason the initial download was missing some files. I did as you advised and downloaded again and saw the tngmobile.css as well as a host of others that I did not have previously (although the site seemed to be behaving itself until now). I have ensured all missing files are in place and the mod installs fine now.

Cheers

Giles

If you attempted to download and install the following mods:

* Mobile Media
* Mobile Individual Page Map Mod

Please do so again.  My Copy Link and Paste skills were deficient, so the URL was incorrect.

Note that there is a Mobile Individual Page Map - Person Map version if you currently are using Bart Degryse's Person Map, which you should uninstall.

If you are using the Compact Person Media mod, it is not compatible with the Mobile Site Enhancements mod

Thanks to code provided by Darrin, I have posted a new mod that fixes the input form on the Dates and Anniversaries page so that it collapses correctly on smart phones and tablets

Mobile Site Fix Anniversaries

when used in conjunction with the Responsive Tables mod, the page now displays correctly on smaller devices.

Thank you Darrin for providing the code that will be in a future TNG upgrade

I am trying to overcome Google's Site not mobile friendly caveat.  I have 11.1.1 installed and when trying to install Mobile site enhancements mod 11.1.1.2 it say that it cannot install it:

The file tng_mobile_sprite_medium.png is missing from the installation zip.  Ken Roy, the author, can fix that.  I have attached the file from the earlier version.Copy it into your mod/ folder and reattempt installation.  I will contact Ken.

Zip file has been replaced on the TNG Wiki.  Sorry about that.  I am currently vacationing in Northern Maine on an island with no internet access. So sorry for the delay in fixing it.

Ron, thanks for adding the needed sprite file here.  Just came into town to get caught up on a couple of things since it is raining..
