    Working with PDF files

Ted I am referring to an image editing program. Using that, you could increase the canvas size of the image. This does not amend the image. You would then use the same program to include text where you want it to go. After this, you save the new image with a different name and use that image to link too.

    Working with PDF files

Well, I created an IBeam.html page and uploaded it to my ebbets/documents location, but when I click on the link I get a "404 not found" error. When I look at the documents directory in my FTP program I see IBeam.pdf and IBeam.html sitting there side-by-side. Is there a reason that TNG can't open the html file? Ted

Brett, You wrote " If you want text and photo together, you could create/edit the image to include the text, and link to that file instead." How might I do that if I have a jpg image -- other than creating a PDF?

    Working with PDF files

While you wish the PDF to open in all browsers and for all users, this may not be the preferred user option. If like me, I am used to opening my downloads from Tools tab (Firefox) and viewing that way. This allows me to either look straight away or look at the file later, when time permits. It also means I can view later if I wish to look again, rather than needing to be on the website it came from. If you want text and photo together, you could create/edit the image to include the text, and link to that file instead.

    Working with PDF files

OMG! It seems that the link was working all along! Of course when I click on a PDF link in Firefox it downloads the file to my "downloads" folder on my PC. There it is, and I have to know to click in the "download arrow" in the address bar of my browser to open it. (and I'm thinking that if I missed that for the past few days others who come to my website won't notice it either.) But when I do the same thing in IE, that browser opens a new tab with nothing in it. So now I'm wondering if there's a way to force it to launch Adobe Reader no mater what browser the user is using? (Is that redundant? "...user is using?") Also open is how to open the PDF file(s) from the "Documents" link in the LHS of the template 10 home page? If there's no way to force the PDF to launch Adobe Reader I may have to re-think using PDF files at all. My main objective here is to have a document with photos and text together. Perhaps rather than using PDF files to do that I could create simple HTML pages and link to those. Yes? (I do know how to make simple HTML pages.) Your thoughts? Ted

Michael I am still be following up on the above comment Ted said, that no file opens from the PDF link from the Feature section for him. Hopefully I am incorrect and the problem is indeed finalised.

    Working with PDF files

Brett/Alan I too can see the pdf (homepage link) and it opens in Firefox for me. However, this is not what Ted was saying earlier : i.e. he couldn't search for this file in documents. The homepage link can be put there as an external link from Admin/Setup/Templates : i.e. it's not a media type. Ted has also added this to doc-media but he cannot find or link to it. At least this is the scenario that I'm reading from his difficulties. Now I've just taken a look at his site and the pdf file IS listed in media and I successfully searched for it. Looks like case closed. https://steelefamilyhistory.net/ebbets/browsemedia.php Michael

Have you opened the readme.html file from within your web browser and local host or is it still open from the computer?

Ted When you are on other sites and click a PDF link, how does the PDF file usually open? In the browser, opening Adobe Reader or something else?

    Michael,

I have just now set up a new admin user and password for my site:

    Name: TempUser

    P/W: SFHTemp-001

    If you go to https://steelefamilyhistory.net/index.php

and click on Ebbets Genealogy in the "Features" box it'll take you to my Ebbets family home page. (It's in a sub-directory of the Steele family page). If you then go to Admin / Media you will see two entries: (1) "Men on a Beam" in Photos and (2) "Men on the Beam" in documents. (I seem to have been inconsistent in my naming...) The first one is a jpg and the second one is the fabled PDF file.

If you are able to construct a link to the PDF file, please give me (in some detail please) the step-by-step actions that yu took to make it happen. I anticipate having many PDF files (for both this URL and a site in another sub-directory).

I'd like to understand (1) how to link to it via a URL in the "Features" panel, and (2)how to have them "just show up" in the "Documents" link on the LHS of the home page.

I'm sure that once I understand the sequence of steps to upload a PDF and make it accessible it's probably a two-minute task.

Thanks so much for hanging in there with me, Ted

    Working with PDF files

Ted As I mentioned in previous post, I have gone to your website ( https://steelefamilyhistory.net/ebbets ) and used the Link (I-Beam) in your Features section. The file (I-Beam.pdf) opens for me, so the path is correct. ( From your file: MEN ON THE BEAM In 1932 Charles Clyde Ebbets (no. 62) was working in New York) Alan asked: do you have a pdf reader on your computer? Is it being used as the default reader for your PDF from the web browser. You did not reply if the file is actually being downloaded to your OC when you click the link, rather than opening in browser or PDF reader.
  17. That answers my question in full. Thank you!

    Working with PDF files

Ted No, that is not the "secret". My post pics show that you can add/link a pdf file with or without a thumb (I thought that was clear). As your pdf file is a doc-type, then TNG will use the default doc thumb, unless you add your own and select it (as I did). I suspect your difficulties lie with getting the right path to your file(s). I've messaged you for temp admin access. M

Hi Ted One issue that hasn't been mentioned (and of course might be way off beam): do you have a pdf reader on your computer? I have a few pdf files downloaded into various document folders and access them from within my historytemplate.php articles. Here is an example: At the bottom of column 2 "Associations and Acknowledgements" there is a link "A copy of this article prepared in an Adobe pdf format is available here" Below that is a link to download such a reader for viewers who are unable to read the file (it's actually an icon under the right hand side of the ribbon bar): The Story of Edward Bretland: Part 2 Be interested to know if that helps Alan

    Working with PDF files

Well, after numerous attempts over three days I am still unable to upload a PDF that I can link to. From Michael's most recent post the "secret" apparently is to somehow get the damned thing to also create a thumbnail -- a feat that I have yet to accomplish. I am an Ivy League educated guy with almost 50 years of IT experience for a Fortune 500 company, and yet I find it impossible to upload a PDF to my website that I can actually link to. Why is this so difficult? Frustrated in St. Louis... Ted

TNG 12.02 Fail to create all tables

A bit more information should be provided. Is this a full install? Is it a TNG upgrade? If an upgrade, from which TNG version? What is your local PC environment? Is this a WampServer environment, an XAMPP environment, a NAS environment or something else like a Raspberry pi?
  22. Hi trying to install TNG on my PC and when I run the readme.html I get to the step to create the tables and it never ends. When I check the MySQL database only some of the tables are present it does not seem to be able to finish the install of the tables. Is there a script I can manually run in MySQL to create all the tables?

Ok folks, I think I got the way to organize your horizontal menus on the standard TNG Ribbon.

I was a matter of code placement as to what code and where placed.

Attached is the genlib.php which shows you what I placed where (red).

I have been doing random link test from my menus Find / Media / Info / Other.  Other is just a testing menu which has two submenus. No problems, yet!

Love to hear what you think,,,

      Paul,

OK, good, glad things are working for you, just curious why you didn't tack onto  the thread/topic you started.  I don't think there was ever a question whether the code could be shifted around, I and others were just giving advice to for changes of this nature, conflicts with other mods,  using mod manager, etc.

Certainly appreciate all of the help and suggestions and why I did not stick to the thread is because I really not sure how to work these Forums.

The changes seem to work but I am still testing  From all the suggestions I thought I was playing with fire and it still may be a waste of time. The smartest thing I have done is play with it on my home Server.  :-)

      Thanks to all,,

    Michael,

I was typing a message when it disappeared... I must have hit a stray key. Drat!

    My website is https://steelefamilyhistory.net/ebbets/

It is a public site, so there should be no username or password. I have a username and password for my FTP. Do you need those?

Can you reply to me via email at eesteele@swbell.net?

Thanks, Ted Steele (St. Louis, Missouri USA)

    Working with PDF files

Ted I went back to my pdf file to include it as a document type on my site. All I did was go to Admin/Media/Add New and selected the file name. I didn't bother with a thumbnail in order to let TNG use the default for documents (and saved). You can now see the entry from the image as number 4 in my list, and I was able to search for it no problem. I then uploaded a pdf icon image (png) also to the documents folder. Then I edited my entry by selecting the icon file name as my choice of thumb and saved again. See below Michael
